Africa my Africa
Africa my Africa
Africa of proud warriors inancestral savannahs.
Africa of whom my grandmothersings
On the banks of the distantriver, I have never known you
But your blood flows in my veins.
Your beautiful black body thatirrigates the fields.
The blood of your sweat
The sweat of your work, the workof your slavery.
Africa, tell me Africa
Is this you, this back that isbent, this back that breaks
Under the weight of humiliation
This back trembling with redscars
And saying no to the whip underthe midday sun, but a gravevoice answers me
Splendidly alone amidst whiteand faded flowers
This is your Africa springing upanew
Springing uppatiently, obstinately
Whose fruit bit by bitacquires, the bitter taste ofliberty
