    • LISTS DIRECT RELIEF PROVIDED MORE HELP TO MORE PEOPLE THAN EVER BEFORE IN FISCAL YEAR 2010—$243 MILLION IN MEDICAL AID. Testing millions of women for HIV. Providing medicines for uninsured people in the U.S. Helping people in emergencies here at home and around the world. Challenges. Emergencies. Partnerships to help. Heres this years top lists for each. 3 LINDSEY POLLACZEK 1. RAPID HIV TESTING OF PREGNANT WOMEN Every 48 seconds, a child is infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. It is essential HIGH-IMPACT to focus resources on where this infectious disease exists to save those who have contracted it and PARTNERSHIPS can transmit it and those who are most likely to contract it. Deciding who to treat requires CHALLENGING knowing who is sick. Rapid test kits are donated by Abbott—16 million tests to prevention programs throughout the developing world since 2002— HIV/AIDS and distributed by Direct Relief to 69 developing countries eligible for the program. 2. ANTIRETROVIRALS FOR HEALTHY LIFE According to a 2008 UNAIDS report, an estimated 33.2 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. Africa has been the hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, as the continent is home to 68 percent of those infected. Antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), which significantly delay the progression of HIV to AIDS and allow people infected with HIV to live relatively normal, healthy lives, are available on LINDSEY POLLACZEK average to only 44 percent of those who require the drugs. Direct Relief partnered with the OGRA Foundation in Kenya and the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare in Zimbabwe to distribute ARVs to more than 6,000 HIV-infected people annually. 3. FIGHTING OPPORTUNISTIC INFECTION OUR MISSION IS TO IMPROVE THE Cryptococcal meningitis and other serious fungal infections are frequent complications in patients infected with HIV. To help women and their babies survive childbirth in her country,Edna Adan Ismail founded a hospital in 2002 with her own funds thatserves as a center for care and training. Direct Relief has supported the Edna Adan University Hospital since2005 with more than $1 million in medicines and supplies, and joined withthe Fistula Foundation to build a surgical block at the hospital with threenew operating theaters that have just opened. These facilities will vastlyincrease women’s access to needed surgeries and interventions whencomplications arise during delivery. Among her manyaccomplishments, Ismail was the first EDNAgirl in her country to read, the firstnurse-midwife, and the former FirstLady.
