    No! But it can (and TIFF on 2008R2!)

    Install appropriate Ifilters.
    Make registry changes.
    Restart IIS.
    Perform full content crawl.

    After WSS install Search Server Express (SSX). (Not on SBS though!).
    SSX will do WSS site by default but add:

    Other SharePoint sites.
