  • 3. A technological masterpiece protected by 14 patents, the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller provides the informationglobal travellers need to keep track of time at a glance.Launched in 2012, the Sky-Dweller is a compellingtimepiece of revolutionary design that blends to perfectionmechanical sophistication and ease of use.42 mm in white goldsky-dweller3Introduction
  • 4. The original design of the dual time zone display andthe discreet annual calendar endows the Sky-Dwellerwith an exclusive aesthetic identity, singling it out as theglobal traveller’s watch. The rotatable fluted bezel and the42 mm case crafted from a solid block of 18 ct gold aredistinguished hallmarks of Rolex elegance.dual time zone,24-hour displayStyle of the Sky-Dweller4Style
  • 5. Thanks to sophisticated engineering, the Sky-Dweller isintuitive to read and simple to use. Local time is displayedby the traditional centre hands and the off-centre rotatingdisc with 24 hour markers shows the chosen referencetime on the dial. The Cyclops lens magnifies the date foreasy reading while the current month is displayed in one of12 discreet apertures around the circumference of the dial. This annual calendar requires only one date adjustmenta year, in February. The innovative fluted Ring Commandbezel completes the interface, allowing the global travellerto easily select each individual function he needs to set.masteringtime and spaceFunction of the Sky-Dweller5Function
  • 6. Function of the Sky-DwellerThe rotatable Ring Command bezel interacts with the movement to allow theglobal traveller to easily access the watch functions that need to be set. Thebezel can be turned to any one of three positions to select the date, local timeor reference time. The selected function can then be rapidly adjusted in eitherdirection using the winding crown. This intuitive interface is based on a complexmechanical module which consists of no fewer than 60 components, the productof state-of-the-art watchmaking and micromechanical expertise. Such innovationepitomizes Rolex’s mastery of the design and manufacture of all the essentialcomponents of the watch.fluted ringcommand bezel6Function
  • 7. second time zoneA fixed inverted red triangle on the dial points to the chosenreference time – the time at home or at the traveller’s usualworkplace – on the off-centre 24-hour disc. At a glance, this 24-hour display clearly distinguishes daytime hoursfrom night-time hours in the other time zone (for example,10 p.m. versus 10 a.m.). At any moment and in any location, the global traveller knows if it is an appropriate time tocontact colleagues or loved ones on the other side of theworld.Function of the Sky-Dweller7Function
  • 8. The conventional centre hour, minute and secondshands indicate local time. It can be changed quickly andeffortlessly without affecting the precision of the traveller’stimekeeping thanks to the Rolex jumping hour hand. The hour hand is adjusted independently in one-hourincrements, either forwards and backwards, leaving theminute and seconds hands, as well as the reference time, unchanged. The date change is linked to the local timeand occurs within a few milliseconds at midnight. The datedisplayed in the aperture is always the current date at thetraveller’s location.Function of the Sky-Dwellerreference time8Function
  • 9. discreetmonth aperturesThe months of the year are indicated in 12 discreetapertures around the circumference of the dial: Januaryat 1 o’clock, February at 2 o’clock, and so on. The currentmonth is identified in a contrasting colour.Function of the Sky-Dweller9Function
  • 10. revolutionaryannual calendarInspired by the Saros, an astronomical phenomenon, theSky-Dweller’s date only requires one adjustment a year – onthe 1st of March, February having only 28 or 29 days. Theingenuity of the mechanical system developed by Rolexlies in its simple and systematic handling of the irregularoccurrence of 30- and 31-day months, allowing it to displaythe correct date throughout the rest of the year. With theSaros system, Rolex added only two gear ratios and fourgear wheels to its traditional instantaneous date calendar.Such simplicity ensures a peerlessly robust and reliableannual calendar function.Function of the Sky-Dweller10Function
  • 11. Function of the Sky-Dwellersaros systemThe Saros system is designed around a fixed planetary gearwheel (equivalent to the Sun) at the centre of the movement.A satellite wheel (whose centre represents the Earth)engages with the planetary wheel and rotates, orbitingthe planetary wheel in one month, driven by the date disc. The satellite wheel is fitted with four fingers (the Moon) for thefour 30-day months (April, June, September and November). These fingers reach a specific position at the end of eachmonth, and force the date to jump two days only in 30-daymonths. After one year, the system realigns to its originalposition, having completed a full Saros cycle.11Function
  • 12. saros: planetaryinspirationAt the heart of the Sky-Dweller movement lies arevolutionary planetary mechanism inspired by the cyclicalalignment of Sun, Earth and Moon. The Greek term Saros has been used since antiquity todesignate an astronomical cycle of alignment patternsbetween the Sun, the Earth and the Moon which governsthe recurrence of eclipses. This phenomenon inspired thedesign of the Sky-Dweller’s annual calendar mechanism.Spirit of the Sky-Dweller12Spirit
  • 13. FeaturesWhen the Rolex Oyster first appeared in 1926, the fluted bezel had a functionalpurpose: it served to screw the bezel onto the case helping to ensure thewaterproofness of the watch. It was, furthermore, identical to the fluting on thecase back, which was also screwed onto the case for the same reason, usingspecific Rolex tools. Over time, the fluting became a purely aesthetic element, available only in 18 ct yellow, Everose or white gold on Datejust and Day-Datemodels. The fluted bezel is rotatable on the Sky-Dweller, where it has regainedfunctionality to allow easy selection of watch functions. Fluting is a genuine Rolexsignature feature, a mark of distinction.fluted bezel13Features
  • 14. The Sky-Dweller is equipped with calibre 9001, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed andmanufactured by Rolex. Introduced in 2012, it is one of themost complex calibres ever created by Rolex watchmakers.Nonetheless, it is engineered to ensure simplicity of use:a selector wheel on the outside edge of the 9001 ensuresthe interaction of the movement and the bezel of the watchto set the Sky-Dweller’s functions. Like all Rolex Perpetualmovements, the 9001 is a certified Swiss Chronometer, adesignation reserved for high-precision watches that havesuccessfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer TestingInstitute (COSC) tests. Its architecture, in common with allOyster watch movements, makes it singularly reliable.calibre 9001Features14Features
