    • Blu-ray (BD) is a next-generation optical disc format.The format was developed to enablerecording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing largeamounts of data.The name Blu-ray is derived from the blue-violet laser it uses to read and write to the disc.The “e” was intentionally left out of the namedue to trademark restrictions
    • The information density of the  DVD format waslimited by the wavelength of the laser diodes usedSONY started developing a new type of rewritable andlong lasting storage disc and unveiled prototype in October2000The first consumer device arrived in stores on April 10,2003The first Blu-ray Disc titles were released on June 20,2006:THE TERMINATOR , EVOLUTION , HOUSE OFFLYING DAGGERS…..and even MAGADHEERA
    • It comes in four different formatsBD-ROM(Read only): for reading therecorded contentBD-R(recordable): for PC data storageBD-RW(Rewritable): for pc data storageBD-RE(Rewritable): for HDTV (HighDefinition Television )recording
    • Life SpanContent ProtectionCostCapacityRobustness of discCompatible
    • In the case of ordinary discs, the disc life is less .In the rewritable versions, as re-writing is done repeatedly to one area of the disc most probably, the inner perimeter limiting the disc life.BDFS (Blu-ray Disc File Structure is designed so as to avoid this problem, by using a system that uses free disc spaces with equal frequency
    • Blu-ray discs are better armed than currentDVD’s. They come equipped with a secureencryption system – a unique ID that protectedagainst video piracy and copyright infringement COST Long term Profitability model for content Providers Cheapest Production cost
    • The Blu-ray disc enables the recording, rewriting and playback of HD video up to 27 GB of data on a single sided single layer. It is enough to put 2.5 hours of HDTV recording on it. It also can record over 13 hours of standard TV broadcasting
    • Stronger resistance to scratches and fingerprints The protective layer is hard enough to prevent accidental abrasions and allows fingerprints to be removed by wiping the disc with a tissue. COMPATIBLEThe BD drives are designed to be backwardcompatible, i.e. CDs and DVDs work equally well withthe BD drives.
    • Capacity 23.3 25 27GB (single layer)Wave length of the 405nm laserNumerical Aperture of 0.85 the objective lensData transfer rate 36MbpsThickness of the disc 1.2mmDiameter of the center 15mm holeRecording method Phase changeData track Groove recording
    • Disc store digitally encoded data in PITS.Pits: spiral groves that runs from the center of the disc to its edge.A laser reads the other side of these pits to play the movie or program that is stored on the disc.Track pitch: it is the distance between the two tracks (of pits) on the surface.
    • ADVANTAGES Record HDTV without any quality loss Instantly skip to any spot on disc Record one program while watching other on the disc Create playlists Edit or reorder programs recorded on discAutomatically search for an empty space on the disc toavoid recording over a programAccess to web to download subtitles and other extrafeature.Contents Protection
    • High definition television recordingHigh definition video distributionMass data storage
    • The Blu-ray Disc format offers consumers the abilityto record their High Definition television broadcastsin their original quality for the first time, preservingthe pure picture and audio level as offered by thebroadcaster.Next level in home entertainment, offering anunsurpassed user experience Since Blu-ray Discformat incorporates the strongest copy protectionalgorithms of any format or proposal to date, theformat allows for recording of digital broadcasts whilemeeting the content protection demands of thebroadcast industry.
    • Depending on the encoding method, there isroom for more than seven hours of the highest HDquality video. There is even room for additionalcontent such as special features and other bonusmaterial to accompany the High Definition movie.The Blu-ray Disc movie format greatly expands ontraditional DVD capabilities, by incorporating manynew interactive features allowing content providersto offer an even more incredible experience toconsumers.
