Memorabilia 2014: The Memory Book of the Activities of Dept. of English, MKBU
Glimpses 2013- 2014!
Hirva Vora & Prakruti Bhatt
Go to the place where you‟re able to take
perfect glance. As soon as you reach there,
you will be able to find everything better!
Second Home It Is!
The place- an eternal source of bliss! Endowed with accomplishments!
11.30 am to 5.00 pm!
First year: We keep exploring everything associated with it.
Second year: We make others keep exploring.
It‟s a realization regarding a life that teaches, '' relying on eyes is nothing
But it is an illusion. This life is meant to discern or to explore
everything. It is not meant to be taught but it is meant to be learnt or to be
perceived. It gives a space of one's own! It is all about self enhancement.
We learn. We teach. We share. We quarrel. We make ourselves feel proud.
We make others feel proud to have us.

A bunch of wishes to God!
Lord, Make us endowed with liveliness to live in peace and to make
others live in peace.
Provide us with that eccentricity which leads us to the place of
Make us rescue when you find us absorbed in negative emotions like
when we are being live and considerate in our own worlds by doing
harm to others!
When we think of temptation, remind us of your presence!
We believe evil lies within but give us the sense of discernment to
gain patience to possess our souls!
From the Desk of the Head of the Department: Prof. Dilip P. Barad
There is always a curious feeling at the end of the academic year. It
makes my heart a bit saddened to see that the people with whom your
shared so many minutes, hours, days, weeks and months are going to
depart! At the same time, it feels heart with joy, happiness, hope and
optimism – these young people are going to make the corners of the world, wherever they
will go, a bit brightening and beautiful.
The fifteen students, who are passing out in April 2014, are full of talent and marvelous
capabilities to work wonders in the world. They all have shown the spark within them, the
glimpse of the sparkle, which illuminated time and again, during last two years, feels my
heart with optimism about their future career. It gives confidence to see that wherever, in
what-so-ever direction they will travel, they are bound towards the destination, which stands
to greet them in the arms of success and happiness.
I would like to mention a few names who worked so hard, sparing their personal times from
learning, to see that some of the traditions and conventions of the Department of English are
carried out smoothly.
The Library – which is the backbone and lifeblood of academic institution was very
efficiently taken care of by Bhumi Vajani and Kashmiraba Jadeja. Without their dedication
and sincerity, no students, research scholars and teachers would have been able to make use
of library resource.
The small but beautiful vicinity surrounding the Department building is pleasing to eyes only
because of the tree plantations and the care taken by Nidhi Kunvarani, Bhavana Baraiya and
Vibhuti Bhatt. They organized two One-Day Gardening events. The Memory-Tree Plantation
and Tree-Guards for protection was planned and effectively carried out by all the students
under their guidance.
The Notice Board is the mirror of the culture and tradition of the academic institute. The
ideas shared on the Notice Board reflect the intellectual thinking capacities of the teachers
and students homed in the building. It also is the space to represent students‟ creativity,
innovation and ingeniousness. It also is the space were history of the events where students‟
participated and performed to give good name to the Department and the University is
documented in form of photographs. This space was very well managed by Deepti Joshi. She
took meticulous care and consideration in managing the space for creativity, innovative ideas
and information sharing.
One of the unique features of our Department is Daily Schedule. The students get an open
stage to speak, to share, to express, to converse with the class on the topics of their interest,
on their creative writings, on opinions they build on contemporary issues / events, their
reviews on books, movies, and websites, also a platform to sing songs, to recite poems . . .
and whatever talent they have to display. This is considered as very important daily activity
where, in real sense, a lot of learning happens in terms of gaining self-confidence and
improving the level of self-esteem. It also helps in identifying the real self. Hetalba Gohil and
Vibhuti Bhatt administered this activity to the best of their capacities. But for a few days,
when I was out of town for some academic extension and on the days of extra lectures, where
in this activity faced some hiccups and bumpy road, it was quite well planned throughout the
As the Department makes extensive use of Information and Communication Technology in
teaching and learning process, it requires a dedicated team of students to take care of
projectors, sound systems, laptops and PCs in language lab. Yashpalsinh Gohil, Pratipalsinh
Chudasama, Devendra Joshi and Deepti Joshi tried their best to see that things ran smoothly
whenever technological tools were required. During the visit of Language Lab by
schoolchildren, they took great care with the help of Heeral Bhatt, Bhavna Baraiya, Hitesh
Parmar, Saryu Baraiya, Sejal Vaghela and others to see that all the systems ran efficiently.
Annual Academic Picnic is yet another event, which is a part of the tradition of Department.
It gives opportunity to students to understand the milieu in which we are living, breathing,
learning and growing. All geographical locations, the temples, the forts, hill-top shrines,
forest etc have its unique feature. This time students under the leadership of Devendra Joshi
and Yashpalsinh Gohil planned the picnic to places like Ghela Somnath, Minal Devi Shrine,
Hingolgadh Nature Interpretation Centre, Sarangpur Hanumanji Temple and Kundal
Swaminarayan Temple. It was yet another memorable day!
It was great to see that students very actively participated in Teachers‟ Day, Navratri Day and
in celebration of Birthdays‟ of all the students. This year Avani Dave and Kashmiraba Jadeja
quite ably managed all these celebrations.
Project work is an integral part of academics at Post-Graduate level. It was great to see that
Aneri Thakar and the group of students (Devendra Joshi, Pratipalsinh Chudasama and Deepti
Joshi) did quite a good work in Project on ELT. It is expected that more of such research
projects are done by students in future.
Amidst all the works, activities and events, there was one very creative project undertaken by
Prakruti Bhatt. She has a beautiful skill in painting murals. Murals, which are very cost
effective – with the help of earthen things as pigments, she can paint murals, which are very
attractive and give wonderful looks to the walls of Classrooms and Offices of the
Department. Under her aegis, Hirva Vora, Deepti Joshi and Heenaba Zala (Visiting Faculty)
worked on several holidays, Saturday and Sundays to beautify walls of the classrooms of the
Department. The Department will always remain grateful to Prakruti and all those who
helped her in this work. This is one of the most memorable gifts ever given by the students as
a part of their gratitude to the Alma Mater. The images of these murals are beautifying the
front page of this Memorabilia 2013-14.
It would be injustice to the talent of Yashpalsinh Gohil - in his technological expertise,
especially, in editing videos, if he is not specially mentioned here. He has done wonderful
work in editing Kalayatra, Learning through Video Resources and Dr. Kalra-Poet‟s video,
which are uploaded on YouTube. He had potential to contribute a lot to the Department but
because of his personal responsibilities, he was not able to spare enough time. And that‟s the
real regret for the Department!
Last but not the least; I am thankful to Hirva Vora for the hard work done for this
Memorabilia 2013-14. She maintained records of all the activities undertaken by students,
throughout the year, documented every bit and piece of information and went on reminding
students to contribute their creativity for this Memorabilia. All the credit for the good things
that you find in this Memorabilia goes to her. . . and Prakruti Bhatt should be thanked for the
last moment help in organizing all content on MS Word
On behalf of Department of English, I am heartily thankful to all these students for
painstaking efforts that they have made to see that the name of the Department shines bright
in the academia of Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University.
I, heartily, wish best wishes to all the students. May their smart work and appropriate attitude
help them to climb the ladder of success!
It is in the success of the students, that Department finds its success,
It is in the achievement of the students, that Department finds its achievement,
It is in the realization of their dreams, that Department realizes its dreams.
I, hopefully, look forward to the new students to carry on with these traditions and
conventions of the Department and make it better wherever they find a space for
Oh! Times! Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
But to be young was very heaven! (William Wordsworth)

(1) Birthday Celebrations
Birthday ! It‟s just not a word but it has many feelings inside this
word.. It is an Opportunity to be together and celebrate Birthday and
congratulate you for surviving another year. But for some reason it's
become far more than that. In Department of English, It‟s a trend to
celebrate all Birthday.
We being member of Birthday committee make cards and bouquet and we celebrate Birthdays by
wishing Birthdays in Daily schedule. All friends individually can come forward and convey their
friends Birthday wishes. It was pleasing to make friends happy celebrating their Birthdays ..Avani
(2) Continuous Internal Assessment
Internal Assessment is one of the precious and effective activities
of Department! I should not have written “activity‟‟ because it falls
under the category of internal exams but fact is that students feel
happy with this exam because it is not only exam where students
are supposed be examined by teachers but this assessment is of 30
marks and it consists of students‟ genuine feedback in
presentations, assignments and tests. Presentations give an outlet to
students to present their views and they are always welcomed!
Students make power point presentation and prepare content to present. They are given enough time
to present with all respect from Sir as well as students! Students are supposed to prepare assignments
and they have to add their assignments to update their blogs and it develops their writing skill as well
as thinking skill! Students have their accounts in Gmail, Blogger and Slide share where they have to
assemble their work as a part of internal examination! Traditional way of taking exams is to let
students write answers in exams and then assessment is done but here presentations and assignments
are also given priority! They help students in developing their L-S-W-R skills. Semester four students
are supposed to create their google sites in which they have to embed their assignments, presentations
and videos also. They can assemble their personal c.v and other activities they are interested in. They
can keep a record of their achievements! These activities provide students with technological
knowledge which becomes very much necessary today! Students give comment on their classmates‟
assignment and presentation. They are given opportunity as students to evaluate their classmates‟
work also! This test is a rehearsal of final exam. As students have to make graphical and audio-visual
presentation, they browse internet and thus learn vital skills of “ googling” which is very much useful
in these days of technoculture. Online discussion via google groups are also done where students are
supposed to give their keen participation! Discussions regarding current topics of controversial
movies, cultural matters, religion, spirituality, literature are also done! The activity of worksheet has
been very much beneficial to students. The texts which are in syllabus are studied and those texts‟
movies are also watched. Students are supposed to answer those questions asked in worksheet and the
difference they find between reading text and watching movie. Visibility always helps students
discern any work of are properly! It is not assessment of students only it is assessment of teachers
(3) Library :
“A Library is like an island in the middle of a vast sea of ignorance,
particularly if the library is very tall and the surrounding area has
We get knowledge about different writers and different books. We know a lot about various cultures
and heritage of the different nation. There are round about 1580 books in our library. Library created
reading interests among us. We also have 200 CDS and VCDS in our library. The catalogue system in
the library saves time in issuing the book. This system helps me in delivering books quickly. And we
have also the soft copy of the catalogue; it is very helpful to searching the books. Those who are
connected with Department of English, they can also take books from library. We learn a lot from
library. Department of English provides good facilities to the M.A., M.phil, PhD and competitive
exams. I got response from students. My friend, Kashmiraba Jadeja has helped me a lot. I learned and
got good experiences here. I would like to thank Head of Department Dr. Dilip Barad who supports
us, giving good facilities‟ and thinks for the betterment of students. Thanks to seniors, juniors, my
classmates and teaching staff on this occasion.
During the journey of two years in our second home, one of the most
awaited days was always the day of picnic, not because that we did have
break from our study but on that day we could stay together for whole day
with our friends and could enjoy a lot. This time it was our turn as senior
to arrange each and everything, so we started arranging all the things from
the day of announcement of picnic.
When sir announced for picnic we all students started chattering, we almost forgot that sir was yet
there, we were so excited for our picnic. We both had different reason for this excitement, for our
juniors it was their first picnic from department while for us it was last picnic from department, so we
all wanted to enjoy as much as we can.
As preparation for picnic, our first task was to decide the place, for it we asked all our the students for
suggesting some good places, after the painful discussion, yes painful because during the discussion
some wanted other place while other some wanted some other place, so it was like DHRAMSANKAT
for us as we did not want to hurt any of our classmates. So, after this discussion we decided route of
GHELASOMNATH TO KUNDAL.
Unfortunately all places were religious and historical, so it was in real sense an academic picnic.
On the 6th
of Jan, early in the morning, around 6:30 we gathered at department where Ghndhyam Bus
was waiting for us. Though it was dark yet beautiful view outside the department and student started
their photo sation even before leaving the place. Finally around 7:15 we left the department and
started our joyful journey. On way to the Ghelasomnath we enjoyed each and every moment and
moves of our dancing. Here every Pappu was enjoying his/her unchoriographed dance without caring
of any one. Soon we reached to our first destination Ghelasomnath, first we went to the temple, read
the history of the temple, and had photo sation; from there we went for very small tracking at the
small hill which is in front of the temple. From the height we felt the beauty of that place; we could
see the whole village from there. As usual as student of Dilip sir, we could not control and started
capturing the beauty of the village in our cameras.ae last after having tea and coconut we moved from
there reached to Hingolgadh, unfortunately it was not open on that day so we could not visit that
place. Hingolgadh is historical place and more than it‟s Palace as well as museum, apart from that its
good place for one day tracking. Though Palace was not open, we could visit the Bird Century,
instead of Birds Snakes were waiting for us. One aged man who was working there informed us about
Snakes and their nature, when we saw more interest in them, he took one snake and offered us to
touch them, one by one we all students started taking photos with snake. We disturbed them almost
for an hour; we tortured them in such way that one of student commented that, “Now on words, not a
single snake will come out if any group of student will come to them”
After torturing Snakes, we rest our self there and took our”Samuhbhojan”where we played passing the
dish game, everyone was passing their food to other and we enjoyed it. After having lunch, we moved
for our next destination which was SALANGPUR.As we has our lunch we were more energetic now
so danced with more energy and disturbed all other students who were trying to have small nap. When
were were busy in dancing and enjoying Sir was planning to give us task as he was reading the article
on White tiger. Finally we reached to SALAGPUR, first we visit the temple, relaxed our self and from
there we went to the Cow-pen (gau-shala), there we surprisingly read the achievements of cows and
buffalos. It was new to us that even they participated in competitions and won. Finally after visiting
Cow-pen, we set again and moved for our last destination of picnic-KUNDAL, Kundal is historical as
well mythical place. We saw that even this small town has been affected by the technology where you
just need to press the switch and you can listen the history and mythical story of place.
At the End of our day, on way to Bhavnagar we had Tea at Sardar‟s hotel, which filled more energy in
us and we started dancing from his hotel and did not stopped until the Department came. As for we
seniors it was our last picnic of department as well as of our academic life, so we wanted to enjoy
every moment and every beat of it, and we enjoyed it. Thanks to all for making our last picnic
memorable for us. If possible you can invite us next year we will like to join you again. Special thanks
to Sir and Madam who were always supportive in this journey of two years.
(5) Yashpalsinh Gohil.
Computers have been really a very important part of our lives. It
helps us to enhance our four main basic skills LSRW (Listening,
Speaking, Reading, and Writing). Language Lab in our Department
has played very important role throughout two years of our M.A.
studies. When we joined the Department, we hardly had our Gmail
ids. Many of us did not even know about the importance of having an
e-mail account. Now we all have e-mail ids through which we are 24
hours interconnected so that we all can participate in online discussion forum in Google group in
which we have a group discussion where we reply to the questions based on our studies, current
affairs, or on very important social or political topics, asked by our well respected professor Dilip
Barad. Now as it is our fourth and last semester, I can proudly say that I have my own blogs (personal
and assignments) on www.blogger.com , a SlideShare(www.slideshare.net) account; I have uploaded
all my presentation videos on YouTube(www.youtube.com) and I am able to manage my YouTube
Channel; and also I have my own Google site (e-Portfolio) where we can embed our all works like
assignments, PowerPoint Presentations and all our presentation videos which are recorded as a part of
our academic activities. These connect all of us to the world and also open the doors to the
employment. I could learn all the things just because we have Language Lab in our Departments with
the internet connection. With four skills it enhanced our Computer literacy also. This all things could
be possible only because of one person, Professor Dilip Barad who was very dedicated to provide us
all these facilities and Ms. Heenaba Zala who also guided and helped us always.
The workshops on using technology in learning are also organized in our Department. We had
„Mobigam Workshop‟ on using technology in learning on June 20, 2013 by University of Leads, U.K.
There was also a school students‟ visit for English Language Lab which was about a software which
can be used to learn four main skills. We have projectors, T.V., DVD Players so that we can have
screening of the movies adapted versions of our text, which helps us to understand the text and we can
do comparative study also; of text and the adapted movie version. Dr. Atanu Bhattacharya was invited
to deal with ELT and CALL with Sem-4 Students. There was also a very interesting class on learning
with technology by Prof. Dilip Barad with reference to some important web tools like Facebook, Hot-
Potatoes, and many others in which we have a group discussion where we reply to the questions
based on our studies, current affairs, or on very important social or political topics, asked by our well

(Direct from Heart) ~ by Yashpalsinh Gohil
We all are very thankful to one and only Dr. Dilip Barad, the man who is so dedicated to his work,
always taught us a lot apart from the literature and who never say no when he is asked for something
and Ms. Heenaba Zala who was always there for us, who has been always kind and generous and
always inspired us. We all the students are very lucky that we completed our M.A. under the guidance
of Dr. Dilip Barad and Ms. Heenaba Zala.

(6) Daily Schedule:
“In our department we have many committees. But Daily Schedule is
more interesting committees. Daily Schedule provide a wide stage for
student to represent themselves students are multitalented because of
these benefit other student get more and more knowledge. In Daily
schedule we activate in Drill, Book report, Regional literature, Poetry
recitation and other activities.
These activities are really helpful to students to deal with their hidden
talent. This kind of activities also builds the students confidence speaks in front of the people. We get
opportunity through this schedule, to improve our fluency and speaking style. In Daily Schedule, we
also celebrate the different language day like Gujarati day, Hindi Day or other days also. Vibhuti
Bhatt helped me many times, in my absence, she writes Daily Schedule on behalf of me.

(7) Notice Board:
It is well said that “if you want to know about the culture and tradition of any
academic institute, observe the notice board and bulletin board of any
In the Department of English, both have their own importance, where everyone
can share the knowledge and creative ideas. For last two years we students and
professor have been observing and putting the articles related to various
subject and images on bulletin and notice board. We are not using it just to share our information but
we are sharing our experience and memory of our activities of these two years journey by putting the
photos of Navarati, picnic, various seminars, Kalayatra, etc.
It is the tradition of our department that everyday students and professor writes quotations on
“Writing Boar”, but this year the we found that students have started writing their own thoughts on
writing boards which is expected from students of literature.
One of the major changes in the by our sir, as he believed that images speaks and conveys more
effectively than words, he started putting interesting images on bulletin board, so now words have
replaced by images in our department.
I would like share my own experience that how reading notice board and bulletin board helped me in
competitive exams like Net. In December E went for NET exams and in one of the papers of literature
there was one question from “The poison Tree”, fortunately I had read it on our bulletin board and I
could answer the question.
So, never ignore notice board and bulletin board because you never know when it will help you in
As we know that „Global warming‟ now-a-day

necessary bricks around trees and plants and also doing nurturing and providing „Soul „ like manual,
and water like basic necessities to plants and trees. And, each year we are planting „Four‟ new plants

E-learning makes a huge way to learn innovatively in today‟s era. The use of Open and
Distance Learning (ODL) makes your learning ability more powerful and attentive. One of the key
elements of a flexible delivery mode is the use of the Information and Communication Technologies
(ICTs) in providing software applications and tools for e-learning. However, the potential of ICT will
only be fully realized if learners have the ability and capacity to use them, and at the same time possess
positive attitudes towards learning with Electronic learning. E-learning applications and processes
include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classrooms and digital collaboration.
E-learning is now a tool which has the potential to enhance and support the traditional
learning system and already it is becoming an integral part of the learning tools used by every
educational organization. E-learning method is best for every learning need.

SMILE OF A CHILD….
It‟s all about the way you smile,
I don‟t know the reason why,
But I just like to see your smile.
The face that reflect the happiness and also,
The way possible to life.
All the pains and miseries goes away
Just by seeing your smile
Smile is the most precious thing
Especially when it wrinkles on the face
Sweet and pinkish Rosy cheeks of a baby
Unconditional and sweet smile
Without the worldly matters high,
It‟s all about the way you smile.

Feminism In Indian and Canadian Female writers‟ works with special reference to Preeti Shenoy‟s
„Life is What you Make it” and Alice Munro‟s works.
First of all I want to recall the definition of „Feminism‟ and what it leads to.
„Feminism is the doctrine or a movement that advocates equal rights for woman.‟
The fact is although the cultural aspects of the societies are varied from the place to another but
the women‟s place in the society is the same i.e. inferior to men. Gender bios is the black spot to the
advanced society of the first nation countries like U.K, France, Canada, U.S.A, China etc. The leading
problem is that men have also changed the psyche of femaleabout how to look and think. She has to
pay the cost of having female body. They undergo the painful process of being supressed. Her
viewpoints were not considered or given importance enough. Their social, political, cultural status
was null. Her strength of reproduction considered as her weakness. To remove the inequality of
woman the movement called feminism aroused. Literature is the mirror of the society so in writing of
various writers it is depicted.Say for example in different genre of writing like literary writing and
popular writing. Here we can see Preeti Shenoy‟s work „Life is What You Make it‟ as popular writing
in comparison with Alice Munro‟s Short stories which is award winning literary work.Sandra Harding
suggests that the study of gender involves three dimensions, gendersymbolism (culture), the socio-
sexual division of labour (social structure) and genderidentities (action and agency).
“He said that the difference between the male and female modes of thought were easily
illustrated by the thoughts of a boy and a girl, sitting on a park bench looking at the full moon.
The boy thinks of the universe, its immensity and mystery; the girl thinks, “I must wash my
hair.” When I read this I was frantically upset; I had to put the magazine down…I wanted men
to love me, and I wanted to think about the universe when I looked at the moon. I felt trapped,
stranded; it seemed there had to be a choice where there couldn‟t be a choice” (Magazine)
Munro is the writer consider as “A writer on the side of woman” by some critics.Munro‟s
stories also explore the idea of barriers - including class and generation gaps - and the effect of
relationships on her female characters. Having Canadian background Munro presents her works in to
the landscape of her motherland.
The protagonist in Munro‟s fiction is chronicler of a particular region, of southwesternOntario.
Her fiction has to be examined from the feminist view point. The stories of AliceMunro are
“well made”. They are journey men‟s work. They deliver the feminist ideologyof Munro. The
subject matter of her stories is the status of women in the patriarchal society. Most of the stories
are concerned “the past with hidden from others but told to in … and thestories do seem
Her stories will explore situations from a female perspective, and be inclined towards a woman‟s
outlook and discovery of feelings and attitudes. She has female protagonist as the representative of the
gender and sufferings. She has covered wide time span in her writings and we have the glance of the
suppression of every decade i.e. sixties, seventies, nineties etc.
There are female writers in India who creates their own world in other language i.e. English.
And feminism is the part of it. An epoch raised by them through the works. Among them Preeti
Shenoy is one. In her book „Life is what you Make it‟ she has depicted the story of a girl who is
weaving bye to teenage and welcoming the adulthood with flying colours. Her name is Ankita
Sharma. The time span is of 90s. Alice Munro present the time span of 90s in her stories „Carried
Away‟, „The Bagger Maid‟, „Post card‟ etc. In it also the female protagonist named Helen Louisa,
Rose respectively. The last one is narrated by first person.
Woman is either treated as deity or an inferior being. Morals and ethics are expected to be
followed by woman only. “Boys and Girls‟ by story by Munro the fact is presented. The narrator is a
girl as per the style of Munro. „Laird‟ is the name of the brother of the narrator. The name suggests
the superiority of male child for parents as well as society. On the other side the narrator is not
allowed to go outside. Ankita too is not allowed to go outside with her friends‟ group which include
girls and boys.
“….the fact that I was not permitted to invite boys home or to visit any boy‟s house…..they let me
write letters as no one would see them whereas going out… meant that people would see and they
The protagonists of the works are expected to be ethical. As if going out or getting oneself free
is the big black spot on the character or so called reputation!!!!The superiority of the male tends them
to find out cones in female persona and make her feel inferior. Like in the work „Post Card‟ the male
character Buddy Shieldssays to female character Rose “Be a GoodGirl!” and also cutting stereotyping
remark, “Now aren‟t you make all this big fuss?”In Carried Away Jack Agnew another male character
played with Louisa‟s emotion at the end. But if we put Louisa at his place then has she be allowed to
playwith emotions or she would be forgiven to do so that‟s the question. For every small mistake
woman is blamed but the same mistake is done by man it is considered as human follies. I think
woman is also a live human being, isn‟t she?
By the nineties women become independent. She tends to get out for work and earn. Although
she cannot saved hers from molestation by males. Ankita too is emotionally blackmailed by her
boyfriend Abhi. And he committed suicide. If she is seeking for partner or having boyfriend there
they put the question of her character. A typical male gazed approach she got. Louisa faced the same
from the male character Jim Frarey. She is considered as „„perked up‟ or „husband prospects‟. Mother
ironically says to Ankita, “"How many guys will you trap with your wily charms, you stupid little
tramp?" My mother almost spat out. Her words cut deep, scooping out my deepest feelings of
apprehension and exposing it threadbare.”
Women‟s behavioural aptitude is also changed as per the absence or presence of the male. The
presence of male makes her feeling inspired as if „being noticed‟ is the most prioritised matter of her
life. Her dressing, gesture, and posture everything is cultivated with this point of view. Ankita‟s
behavioural change is notable when Abhi arrived in her life, which is not much affected while having
long distance relationship with Vaibahv. And after she lost Abhi she is having great trauma. She
became the patient of bipolar disorder!!! She recovers herself with the help of male doctor only. She
admits the fact that she finds herself inspired and motivated in the presence of the doctor
Her need for physical relation is not seen as natural or basic requirement of the human body.
She is expected to be virgin although she is surrounded by so many ogle eyes. She is seeking it for
the security purpose either she is paying for the security of her chastity. In Munro‟s work this matter
we can by female‟s eyesight. In „The Beggar Maid‟ Pettrick a weak male character ogles the female
character. Munro depicts that the dependencies for the sex on opposite person is the same for male
and female. While Preeti Shenoy put the same matter in the mouth of the character Suvi, friend of
Ankita, who is having physical intimacy with her boyfriend.
Female child bounded with lots of restrictions and boundaries just because of social taboos. It
shows the fear of the society. In Munro‟s „Boys and Girls‟ the female narrator is not allowed to work
with her father outside the house, in the field. She says, . “I hated the hot dark kitchen in the
summer”. She is considering herself as father‟s natural helper.
“young girl who carefully observes life, not making judgments butnoting all the peculiarities in
the world around her. That world isauthenticated by the small textures, the descriptions of
setting, matters of dress, standards of conduct, mannerisms of speech, assumptions and attitudes
which specifically characterized thesmall Ontario town in the 1940‟s. There is a documentary
qualityto the best of Munro‟s fiction”.(Stouck)
This reminds us Eve who is the helper of Adam not equivalent to him.Ankita is attending Girls‟
College where only one male professor is working!! Also she is not allowed to go out or for picnic.
She hesitates when she is going to meet Abhi at his house. A kind of guilt is there in her mind. This
shows the shackles of traditions lies deep in the minds of female child as she is considered as torch
For her intelligence and bright carrier either she has to pay by not having a partner or she has to
be subservient and do the duties given to her by GOD from the time of Adam and Eve. Eve also raised
the question of equality after eating the abandon fruit. So in other words for woman talking about
equality was also a sin!! In „The Bagger Maid‟ DrHenshawe is the strong and intelligent female
character with bright carrier but having no spouse to share the life. Ankita too lost Abhi just because
she went to another city for her higher studies and bright future.
In the satire is presented through the description of the physic of the male professor and the
students‟ behaviour towards him while he was taking class, Ankita‟s thinking about the sir placed in
the words like: I doubted if he ever got any female attention outside the gates of the college…the
attitude shows the hidden attraction towards males as well as the desire to be superior then the male
during his presence or absence. The same thing is shown in the works „Carried Away‟, „Boys and
Girls‟ and „The Bagger Maid‟. In „Carried Away‟ the noteworthy device here is that Arthur refers to
Louisa as „The Librarian‟ and never uses her name. This shows that she is considered as an object
even just fulfils the liabilities. In „Boys and Girls‟ little brother asked her sister to pulled him up on
top of barn. And her parents scold her there she has the question how the parents are so much concern
with their son that he can‟t do anything wrong! The mind-set here shows the cultivation difference
between male child and female child. The actual inferiority of male draws them to prove their
superiority. The inferiority is symbolically shown through the weak character Pattrick.
Here in conclusion the leading characters of the Munro‟s work as well as Ankita are not the
torch barriers or fighters as staunch feminist. But they are common characters just around us. They are
incomplete, supressed and victimised, although they never lose their hope.
The stories in the maturing process of the young as recalledlater, and depend partly for their effect on
a bifocal point ofview that sees a situation from both an adolescent and anadult perspective”(Carnon)
And the reader can better connect with them. Even though 90% women are being supressed, she
becomes independent. But man is possessive and selfish enough. He can‟t put aside himself as he
want woman do. He asks full determination and dedication from woman for his own comfort and ego.
Only lady can do it without utter a word, with love and peace. This raise question in my mind can
man ever feel the woman that what she is going through or can he be able enough to do what she is
doing since many years?

In India there are many popular female writers. Preeti Shenoy is one of them. She is an author
and an artist based at Bangalore. Her first book ‟34 Bubblegums and Candies‟, a creative non-fiction
made it to the national best sellers list.
In the book “Life is What You Make It” a girl named Ankita Sharma – a protagonist goes
through ups and downs of the life. She doesn‟t know whre she is going. It is her eighteens. It is
deeply moving and inspiring account of growing up, of the power of faith and how determination and
an indomitable spirit can overcome even what destiny throws at you. And how the society changed for
you as being a girl, especially when you have your own ideas to grow up and living..
Alice Munro, nee Alice Laidlaw, short-story writer (born in Wingham, Ontario 10 July 1931). Alice
Munro is widely regarded as one of the most important short-story writers, not just in Canada but in
the English-speaking world as a whole. n „Selected Stories‟ Alice Munro presents women and their
place in society in a variety of ways. Somecritics call her a feminist writer, or “a writer on the side of
women”. Feminism itself is“a doctrine or movement that advocates equal rights for women”and
literature is a versatile medium for the promotionof women‟s rights in the 20thcentury. Using the
short story form she portrays women living in small-townCanada; she is a modern Canadian writer
and was brought up in this landscape. In addition toinvestigating the roles of women, Munro‟s stories
also explore the idea of barriers - including class andgeneration gaps - and the effect of relationships
on her female characters. As all of her central charactersare girls or women, it is inevitable that her
stories will explore situations from a female perspective, and be inclined towards a woman‟s outlook
and discovery of feelings and attitudes.

I am.....as a failure
“I am..... as a Failure”
When I was in first year B. A. I heard news, “one girl committed suicide because she failed in
internal examination of F.Y.B.Sc.” She was very talented and always gets top scores in examinations.
I comment about this event that, „she has no right to kill herself, she done totally wrong.‟
But when I failed in semester 5 B.A., I understand, what forces the students to commit
suicide. I want to share my experience as a failure.
I failed first time in my life. I am the failure of B.A. examination which is recognised as very
easy and less valuable than any other courses. Result was never imagined. I could not understand how
I should react. I felt as someone hit in my heart directly. Obviously, I felt very painful and sad. I also
blamed university and examiner of my paper.
I was very frustrated and depressed. It was shown in my behaviour also. I became very angry
with myself and others. I wanted to break something, to tear out, to smash, to crack something. I felt
that my hard work of 15 years has become meaningless, my future is finished now.
When I wrote same paper second time I was fully disturbed. I wanted to tear the paper and
run away from the examination hall. I cannot express how I wrote the paper second time.
After some time, I recovered and started to think different. I used my frustration in creative
way, I wrote about my mental condition, my views, my opinions and feelings as a failure. With that I
can free from my neurotic condition.
I thought that education is not life but sometimes it becomes life for some students who love
study and when they failed in examination they think that their future, their world, their life,
everything is finished now.
Once upon a time I joked and laugh on English but now English make my life big joke. Still
whenever I see my mark sheet the word „Fail‟rules my mind and I become sad, shameful then with
full of anger I keep aside the mark sheet. I can never forget that experience of failing. Today I
remember my teacher‟s words, the sentence written by Emily Dickinson that, “After every pain there
is a formal feeling.”
Now I looked this event with different view. Education is only part of life. How can
one university make you failure? They can only makeRed mark or write Fail in your mark sheet. But
they cannot stop you. You have your own life, your own future, skills, experiences, opportunities; it is
only you who can make your life successful or failure.
I want to tell all the students that when you feel frustrated because of failing in something,
think about your skills, your abilities, and think of the world out of school or collages. You may feel
that outer world is more beautiful than your thought.try to live in it you may not remember that you
failed in some silly examination.
Now I am thinking of my bright future. I try to develop my artistic skills. I am laughing with
others, studying with others. My only revenge to my failure is that I must prove myself in further
examination towards university. I understand that my life is in my hand no any mark sheet affected
me, either I enlighten my abilities or remember my sorrowful accident. So, I am...... as I wish.
Now you decide, Can anyone make you Failure?
.... Start thinking....
2. Art and Religion
Relation between Art and Religion
Generally, people put art and religion in opposite way. Artistic people always find problem with
rigidity of religion o, they portrait art and religion
different and art superior than religion.
Art and religion are not opposite or separate from one
another. But we can find them together. Religion makes
art more beautiful even we can say, religion is very
artistic and art is often very religious, spiritual. We
cannot separate art from religion or religion from art.
In Hindu religion there is a logo, , “વત્મભ નળલભ સુન્દયભ”
in this, ‘સુન્દયભ’ means beautiful or artistic. If we see
any picture or idol of any God or Goddess it is always
beautiful. Even we beautify them with human
Even our god and goddess are very fond of arts. We
cannot imagine any picture of Lord Krishna with not
having Flute in his hand. And we cannot find any image
of goddess Saraswati without vina. They are also giving
us message to be artistic.
We cannot find any temple without having some
sculptures and we can easily find sculptures of God
and Goddess in any sculpture.
As Hindu belief, we made beautiful Rangoli in Diwaali which is religious festival. In Navratri we
played Garaba. Religious festivals are itself very artistic and for enjoyment. Because of that religious
belief, now we get art form as painting and dancing. So, it is religion who takes us to art and its
If Mira and Narsinh Mehta are not so religious how can we get
such a beautiful „Bhakti-Literature‟ and how can we enjoy their
heart-touching spiritual songs? We feel many times that, any
good song give us pleasure, but when we heard good Bhajan it
touches our heart and we feel aesthetic delight from it. Even
some people started dancing while hearing these Bhajans. This
is extreme pleasure that they feel.Without religion or high
spirituality our literature also cannot complete. Art also uses
religion to beautify itself. Puranas and scriptures are also have a story and literariness, which people
like to read. From old days to today, religion is very popular tool used by writers or any artist.
Because of religion sometimes we become artistic and because of art we become religious. It is not
religion which smashed art or beauty but it is only rigidity of superstitions and superstitious beliefs
that separate religion and art, which put them opposite side.
Everywhere, in every form we find art and religion together. Either it is „Garba‟ of Navaratri (Dance),
Rangoli of Diwali (painting or drawing), Krishna‟s Rasleela or playing flute (music) or scriptures
having interesting stories (literature) or sculpture, religion and art are always together. We cannot
With these examples, we found that art and religion are never stand opposite, but very near to each
other. And human beings can never separate them. They are interwoven and their relation is unique

Feminist Reading of the Movie‟ Cocktail‟
“Cocktail” a biggest block-buster movie of 2012 has made
me to re-think, every time it gives me something that never
allow me to have peaceful sleep, but the waves of thoughts
go in the same direction that is feminist reading of it. At
some accent Movie is following the same structure of the
movie „‟Kuch kuch Hota hai”. But “Cocktail” has left the
strong image of Ideal Woman in our mind. It has directly
conveyed the massage while “Kuch Kuch hota hai”has has mild tone and because of that we cannot
observe it or we need that keen eye-sight for it.
Movie has very strong star cast Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Diana Penty, Where SaifAli khan
is playing the role of Gautam who is Flirtious ,Casanova type Man. Deepika Padukone as Veronica
successfully won our heart through acting and attitude towards life, a woman who likes to do party all
the time and have no objection in „Leave in relationship‟. She is modern woman with broad thinking
and with womanly nature. Diana Penty as Meera also left strong impact on viewers, a traditional,
cultured who knows cooking and can do prayers represents traditional Indian woman and her journey
from the state of dependent to Independent. Their names are also suggestive but not in the case of
Gautam. Meera suggests the traditional, shy and Sanskari while Veronica stands for modernity. While
Our Gautam is not like Gautam Buddha who has sacrificed his family life for Brahmachrya but
always ready to flirt with women.
