Golden eggs
Long time ago a remote village, in central China was inhabited mainly with farmers and
hunters. One day, a poor farmer lost his entire livestock to flood. He prayed hard to God for
help or his family would die of starvation.
Few days later, an old man with long grey beard, passed by his house took pity on him. He
gave him a goose and said “ I don’t have any expensive thing to give you and hope this goose
will help you to ease your hardship.”
A week later to almost surprise the farmer found and egg in his yard. This was no ordinary
egg. It was a golden egg. He was suddenly overcome with joy.
Thereafter, his livelihood had rapidly improved but the farmer had forgotten his earlier
hardship. He became lazy, arrogant and spendthrift.
Strangely, the goose only laid one golden egg every six months. The greedy farmer lost his
patient and slaughtered his goose thinking there were plenty of golden eggs inside its
stomach.
Though he very much regretted for his foolishness, it’s already too late.

I had a bad experience when I did shopping because of the shop assistant’s fault. However,
the security officer of the shop really embarrassed me of stealing a pair of blue jeans.
That was on Sunday afternoon. I went to a fashion shop with my friends. I chose a pair of
blue jeans to buy and paid for them at the cashier. Unfortunately, the shop assistant was
careless. She forgot to take the censor clip on the blue jeans. So, when I left the shop, the
detector beeped. The security officer shouted at me, “Hey, you…! Stop!!” Then, he took me
to the manager’s room.

A man stopped me and asked me the way to the Hyatt Hotel. I wasn't sure exactly where it
was, but I walked with him to the end of Sunda Street. He was very friendly, and his face
looked so familiar.
Then I remembered where the Hyatt was and told him how to get there. He thanked me
and tried to give me something. I thought it was money. I said 'no' at first, but he really
wanted me to have it, so I took it.
I found the record store and listened to a few records. D' Masive had a new record that was
number two in the top twenty. I decided to buy it. I looked in my bag for my wallet and found
a piece of paper the man gave me. It was a photo.

1.
Whales are the largest animals on the earth. Bigger than elephants, they may grow 95 feet
long, and weigh 150 tons. A baby blue whale, just born, can be 23 feet long and weigh 3 tons.
Although whales live in the oceans and swim like fish, they are not fish. They are
mammals, like cows and elephants. Unlike fish they bear young alive, not as eggs. Their
babies live on their mother’s milk. They breathe through their lungs and hold their breath
when they go under water. If they cannot come to the surface to breathe fresh air, they will
drown. They are warm blooded. Fish, however, lay eggs, breathe oxygen in the water, and are
cold-blooded.
Whales life in all-the ocean, in the winter some of them go to warm waters to breed and in
the summer most of them go to cold waters to feed. There are to kinds of whales, whales with
teeth (tooted whales) and whales without teeth (baleen whales). The toothed whales eat fish
and squid, which they can catch with their teeth, although they swallow their food without
chewing it. The baleen whales eat plankton (small sea animals and plants). When they find
plankton, they open their mouth and swallow the plankton.
Whales have few enemies. Only human and killer whale attack whales. And whales do not
seem to fight among themselves. They usually live from 20 to 30 years.
2.
Kangaroo
A Kangaroo is a marsupial from the family Marcopodidae (marcopods, meaning
‘large foot’). In common use the term is used to describe the largest species from this family,
the Red Kangaroo, the Antilopine Kangaroo, and the eastern and Western Grey Kangaroo of
the Macropus genus.
The Kangaroo is an Australia icon: it is featured on the Australian coat of arms, on
some of its currency, and is used by many Australian organizations, including Qantas.
Kangaroo soon became adopted into Standard English where it has come to mean
any member of the family of kangaroos and wallabies. Male kangaroos are called bucks,
boomers, jacks, or old men; famales are does, flyers, or jills, and the young ones are joeys.
The collective noun for kangaroos is a mob, troop, or court. Kangaroos are sometimes
colloquially referred to as roos.
DICKI OJI MARKETI || XII IPA 2 || ENGLISH TASKS || 12/16/14 10
Kangaroos have large, powerful hind legs, large feet adapted for leaping, along
muscular tail for balance, and a small head. Like all marsupials, female kangaroos have a
pouch called a marcupium in which joeys complete postnatal development.
Because of its long feet, it cannot walk correctly. To move at slow speeds, it used its
tail to form a tripod with its two forelimbs. It then raises its hind feet forward, in a form of
locomotion called “crawl-walking.”

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
You have to consider a number of factors when deciding whether or not to get a job. The
important thing is to arm yourself with as much information as possible, so you can figure
out what choice makes the most sense for you.
If you are considering working part-time, schedule a meeting with your school counselor to
discuss this move. Talk to your counselor about why you want to work and what type of
position you’re seeking. Simply explaining your goals to someone else can help you make
decisions and figure out your priorities.
Schoolwork, including homework and studying for tests, should always be your top
priority. “The activities and courses students choose vary considerably, so it’s important for
young people to keep their individual situations clearly in mind,” says Brad McGowan,
director of the Career Centre at Newton North High School in Massachusetts. Further,
McGowan cautions students who do decide to work: “If you are rushing through your
assignment or not studying enough for tests because of work, it’s time to cut back or quit and
find a less time-consuming job.” He adds, “Students should always let their employers know
what their time limits are.” If you are being pressured to work more hours than you can
handle, you need to find a new place to work. You also need to make sure that a job won’t
prevent you from getting enough rest.

Male chauvinism (men's believe in male superiority) extends even into the area of
automobile driving, it seems. They believe that they are far better drivers than women. Men
consider women drivers incompetent, inattentive and even dangerous behind the wheel.
However, statistics prove that women are, in fact, safer drivers than men. For example,
insurance rates for women are 20 percent than they are for men. Another proof is that more
accidents are caused by male drivers between the ages of 18 and 25 than by any other groups.
Also the greater percentage of accident involving death is caused by men. Although women
are criticized for being too cautious, they are really just being safe drivers.
The reason for women driver's safer habits can perhaps be found in the differing attitudes
of sexes toward automobiles as a convenience, like a washing machine.
On the other hand, men regard the automobile as an extension of their egos. Using it as a
weapon when they feel particularly aggressive or using it as a status symbol.
In all, women are safer drivers because of their attitude. Men can learn to become safe
drivers if they adopt the attitude that an automobile is merely a convenience.

The following text is for questions 1 to 4
A geyser is the result of underground water under the combined conditions of high
temperatures and increased pressure beneath the surface of the earth. Since temperature
rises approximately 1 F for every sixty feet under the earth's surface, and pressure increases
with depth, the water that seeps down in crack and fissures until it reaches very hot rock in
the earth interior becomes heated to temperature in excess of 290 F. Because of the greater
pressure, the water shoots out of the surface in the form of steam and hot water. The result is
a geyser. In order to function, then a geyser must have a source of heat, reservoir where
water can be stored until the temperature rises to an unstable point, an opening through
which the hot water and steam can escape, and underground channels for resupplying water
after an eruption.
Favorable conditions for geyser exist in some regions of the world including New Zealand,
Iceland, and the Yellowstone National Park area of the United States. The most famous
geyser in the world is Old Faithfull in Yellow Park. Old Faithfull erupts almost every hour,
rising to a height of 125 to 170 feet and expelling more than ten thousand gallons during each
eruption.
1. How geyser is produced?
A. By the rise of temperature pressure functioning hot steam.
B. From a huge tension of heated water that coming out from the earth crack.
C. From the heated temperature in earth crack that absorbing water.
D. From the temperature and absorbed water that occurs on earth surface.

All planes need air to presure under their wings to stay up in the air. As they move forward.
The higher air pressure underneath their wings pushes them upward and gives them lift.
The smooth, streamlined shape of the plane allows the air to flows easily over its surface.
This helps to reduce the drag caused by the air pushing against the plane and allows it to
move rapidly through the air.
Planes move forward using engines. This movement is called thrust. Moving forward keeps
a stream of moving air passing over the wings. If the engines fail, theplanes will begin to
descend very quickly.
The air above the wing moves faster, so it is at a lower pressure than the air under the
wing.
The air under the wing moves more slowly and is slightly squashed, so it is at a higher
pressure than the air above the wing.

Integrated Pest Management
There is no best way to deal with pests in agriculture. Pesticides which are commonly used
may cause many problems. I think combining different management operations is the most
effective way to control pests.
Firstly, the chemicals in the pesticides may build up as residues in the environment and in
the soil which absorbs the chemicals. This reduces the quality of farm product.
Secondly, pests can gradually become resistant to pesticides. This means that newer and
stronger ones have to be developed.
Lastly, some pesticides affect non target plants and animals such as fish and bees. This
affects the ecology and environment as well.
So, understanding of ecology of an area helps a lot in pest control. Pesticides should be
chosen and applied carefully so that they don't affect the ecological balance and
environment.
Therefore, integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option to fight pest in
agriculture and livestock.

Keeping dogs
There are many reasons for keeping dogs as pets in the city area, but many people feel that
keeping pet dogs should not be allowed in the city. Dogs are often not taken care properly.
They are kept in small backyards and rarely taken for walks. They are left in the yard all day
by themselves while the family is at work. Very little attention is given to the dog and it is not
a very good life for it. It is no wonder why these dogs bark and disturb the neighbours and
become a nuisance to the community.
On the other hand, not all people treat their dogs this way and why should the people receive
a lot of pleasure and enjoyment from dog's suffer? Dogs can make a lonely person's life
happy or make wonderful playmate. It can also teach a child responsibility as they not only
get to lay with the dog, but also need to exercise, feed, and care for the dog.
I feel that we should be allowed to keep dogs in the city, because if it is taken care of
properly, dogs can be a great source of pleasure. As a child I used to enjoy playing and taking
care of my pet. There is not greater loyalty a person can get than from a well-cared dog.

Faster planes and cheaper flights
Faster planes and cheaper flights are making it easier than ever before for people to travel.
In the most 'developed' societies, visiting exotic places is a sought-after status symbol. The
tourism industries of both developed and developing countries have recognised this fact and
are learning to take advantage of it.
There are, however, some problems associated with this new industry.Firstly, there is the
increasing crime rate. Some local's tourists as an easy prey because, not only are they in
unfamiliar territory and therefore less able to take care of themselves, but also they carry
visible items of wealth, such as cameras and jewelery which can be disposed of quickly for
profit.
Another major problem is health. With greater mobility comes greater danger of spreading
contagious diseases around the world. One carrier returning home could easily start an
epidemic before their illness was diagnosed. Moreover, the emergence of many diseases
which resist antibiotics is causing scientists to be increasingly concerned about this issue.
Also to be considered is the natural environment, which can be seriously threatened by too
many visitors. Australia's Great Barrier Reef, for example, is in danger of being destroyed by
tourists and there are plans to restrict visitors to some of the more delicate coral cays.
These are just three of the reasons why any country should be wary of committing itself to
an extensive tourism development program.

Indonesia put in an impressive performance in their 2-0 defeat of Singapore, but still failed
to qualify for next year's AFC U-22 soccer championship after finishing a third place at the
end of Group E matches in Pekanbaru, Riau on Sunday.

An Alliance Could Answer The Growing Threat from
Google and Facebook
By Evelyn M.RuIsi and Nick Bilton
Apple, which has stumbled in its efforts to get into social media, has talked with Twitter in
recent months about making a strategic investment in it, according to people briefed on the
matter.
Although apple has been hugely successful in selling phones and tablets, it has little
traction in social networking, which has become a major engine of activity on the Web and
on mobile devices. Social media are increasingly influencing the ways people spend their
time and money — important consideration for Apple, which also sells application, games,
music and movies.
Apple has considered an investment in the hundreds of millions of dollars, one that could
value Twitter at more than $10 billion, up from an $8.4 billion valuation last year, these
people said. They declined to be identified because the discussions were private.
There is no guarantee that the two companies, which are not in negotiations at the
moment, will come to an agreement. But the earlier talks are a sign that they may form a
stronger partnership amid intensifying competition from companies like Google and
Facebook.
Apple has not made many friends in social media. Its relationship with Facebook, for
example, has been strained since a deal to build Facebook featured into Ping, Apple's music-centric
social network, fell apart. Facebook is also aligned with Microsoft, which owns a
small stake in it. And Google, an Apple rival in the phone market, has been pushing its own
social network, Google Plus.
1. What is the news about?
A. Social networking.
B. Apple's new products.
C. Twitter strategic investment.
D. Twitters success in social media.
E. Apple's plan to cooperate with Twitter.

It was the dawn of science and technology. Anything seemed possible –even the creation of
life itself. Victor Frankenstein becomes obsessed with this idea and works relentlessly to
prove his theories; but the glory he imagined becomes a living nightmare –not only for him,
but for his friends and family too.
Mary Shelley’s gothic horror story- Frankenstein-was first published in 1818 and has been
the inspiration behind numerous stage productions and films – many of which strayed a long
way away from her original masterpiece. Classical Comics presenting a full-colour graphic
novel remains true to this classic tale, bringing the original story to life which has never been
created before.
This graphic novel is available in two versions: Original Text and Quick Text editions. The
Original Text stays faithful to Shelley’s original text, while the Quick Text brings the story up
to date by presenting the text into a more simplified style so that the tale is accessible to all
readers.
The Quick Text edition will allow you to soak up a general feeling for the characters and
locations, while the Original Text version will help you easily slip into the language in which
the novel was written.
Even if you’re not studying the original, this graphic novel is worth buying. It’s a great
story, and should be one that everyone has the chance to read. Now, thanks to this release,
even those who don’t particularly like to read too much are given the chance to find this tale
and hopefully it may encourage them to search out the original book too.

the book’s release; and a brief look on how Frankenstein has been adapted to many different

Harry Potter and Philosopher’s Stones
Judged by this first volume, the Harry Potter books are a fine addition to English children’s
fantasy literature. Harry Potter, orphaned when his parents are killed by the evil wizard
Voldemort, is taken in by his aunt and uncle, who are Muggles – ordinary, non-magical
people. Harry is rather out of place there, but things improve greatly for him when goes to
the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – except that one of the staff is in league
with Voldemort.
Part of the attention of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone comes from the familiar
but at the same time exotic setting of an English public school, complete with houses and
schoolboy adventures, in which Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione struggle to save the
world and win the house cup.

Making Candles
Making coloured and scented candles is really quick and simple. What's more, you'll save
so much money. If making candles is easy, why do you ever buy one from a shop? What you
need in making candles are wax, moulds, wick, dye discs, essential oils, and a double boiler.
All these materials are available from craft shops. Or if you do not want to buy them, you can
improvise with an old saucepan, Pyrex jug, or even a sturdy can, in a pot of water. After
providing the materials, follow this procedure or instruction in making candles!
First of all, melt the wax. All wax has a flash point, so to prevent it from bursting into
flames; you must melt it in a double boiler, with water at the bottom of the pan.
Then, prepare the mould with the wick. Thread the wick through the mould and make sure
that you leave a good few centimeters sticking out of the hole in the bottom.
After that, add the scent. If you want a scented candle, add a few drops of essential oil to
the melted wax. You can use any essential oil you like, as long as it doesn't contain water.
Next step, pour the wax into the mould. Try and tip the wax into the mould quickly, all in
one go, to minimize spillage and air bubbles.
Then, release the bubbles and top it up. Releasing the air bubbles will eventually make the
candle sink, so you will need to top it up with more melted wax.
Finally, remove it from the mould. After four or five hours, the candle can be taken out of
its mould.
Your candle is now ready for display. Remember, you must always leave it for a day before
lighting it.

Although whales live in the oceans and swim like fish, they are not fish. They are mammals, like cows and elephants. Unlike fish they bear young alive, not as eggs. The important thing is to arm yourself with as much information as possible, so you can figure out what choice makes the most sense for you. If you are considering working part-time, schedule a meeting with your school counselor to discuss this move. Talk to your counselor about why you want to work and what type of position you’re seeking. Simply explaining your goals to someone else can help you make decisions and figure out your priorities. Schoolwork, including homework and studying for tests, should always be your top priority. “The activities and courses students choose vary considerably, so it’s important for young people to keep their individual situations clearly in mind,” says Brad McGowan, director of the Career Centre at Newton North High School in Massachusetts. Further, McGowan cautions students who do decide to work: “If you are rushing through your assignment or not studying enough for tests because of work, it’s time to cut back or quit and find a less time-consuming job.” He adds, “Students should always let their employers know what their time limits are.” If you are being pressured to work more hours than you can handle, you need to find a new place to work. You also need to make sure that a job won’t prevent you from getting enough rest. DICKI OJI MARKETI || XII IPA 2 || ENGLISH TASKS || 12/16/14 13

They believe that they are far better drivers than women. Men consider women drivers incompetent, inattentive and even dangerous behind the wheel. However, statistics prove that women are, in fact, safer drivers than men. For example, insurance rates for women are 20 percent than they are for men. Another proof is that more accidents are caused by male drivers between the ages of 18 and 25 than by any other groups. Also the greater percentage of accident involving death is caused by men. Although women are criticized for being too cautious, they are really just being safe drivers. The reason for women driver's safer habits can perhaps be found in the differing attitudes of sexes toward automobiles as a convenience, like a washing machine. On the other hand, men regard the automobile as an extension of their egos. Using it as a weapon when they feel particularly aggressive or using it as a status symbol. In all, women are safer drivers because of their attitude. Men can learn to become safe drivers if they adopt the attitude that an automobile is merely a convenience. Since temperature rises approximately 1 F for every sixty feet under the earth's surface, and pressure increases with depth, the water that seeps down in crack and fissures until it reaches very hot rock in the earth interior becomes heated to temperature in excess of 290 F. Because of the greater pressure, the water shoots out of the surface in the form of steam and hot water. The result is a geyser. In order to function, then a geyser must have a source of heat, reservoir where water can be stored until the temperature rises to an unstable point, an opening through which the hot water and steam can escape, and underground channels for resupplying water after an eruption. Favorable conditions for geyser exist in some regions of the world including New Zealand, Iceland, and the Yellowstone National Park area of the United States. The most famous geyser in the world is Old Faithfull in Yellow Park. Old Faithfull erupts almost every hour, rising to a height of 125 to 170 feet and expelling more than ten thousand gallons during each eruption. 1. How geyser is produced? A. The higher air pressure underneath their wings pushes them upward and gives them lift. The smooth, streamlined shape of the plane allows the air to flows easily over its surface. This helps to reduce the drag caused by the air pushing against the plane and allows it to move rapidly through the air. Planes move forward using engines. This movement is called thrust. Moving forward keeps a stream of moving air passing over the wings. If the engines fail, theplanes will begin to descend very quickly. The air above the wing moves faster, so it is at a lower pressure than the air under the wing. The air under the wing moves more slowly and is slightly squashed, so it is at a higher pressure than the air above the wing. 1. What does the text describe? a. How the wings of a plane work b. Pesticides which are commonly used may cause many problems. I think combining different management operations is the most effective way to control pests. Firstly, the chemicals in the pesticides may build up as residues in the environment and in the soil which absorbs the chemicals. This reduces the quality of farm product. Secondly, pests can gradually become resistant to pesticides. This means that newer and stronger ones have to be developed. Lastly, some pesticides affect non target plants and animals such as fish and bees. This affects the ecology and environment as well. So, understanding of ecology of an area helps a lot in pest control. Pesticides should be chosen and applied carefully so that they don't affect the ecological balance and environment. Very little attention is given to the dog and it is not a very good life for it. It is no wonder why these dogs bark and disturb the neighbours and become a nuisance to the community. In the most 'developed' societies, visiting exotic places is a sought-after status symbol. The tourism industries of both developed and developing countries have recognised this fact and are learning to take advantage of it. There are, however, some problems associated with this new industry.Firstly, there is the increasing crime rate. Some local's tourists as an easy prey because, not only are they in unfamiliar territory and therefore less able to take care of themselves, but also they carry visible items of wealth, such as cameras and jewelery which can be disposed of quickly for profit. Another major problem is health. With greater mobility comes greater danger of spreading contagious diseases around the world. One carrier returning home could easily start an epidemic before their illness was diagnosed. Moreover, the emergence of many diseases which resist antibiotics is causing scientists to be increasingly concerned about this issue. Also to be considered is the natural environment, which can be seriously threatened by too many visitors. Australia's Great Barrier Reef, for example, is in danger of being destroyed by tourists and there are plans to restrict visitors to some of the more delicate coral cays. These are just three of the reasons why any country should be wary of committing itself to an extensive tourism development program. DICKI OJI MARKETI || XII IPA 2 || ENGLISH TASKS || 12/16/14 23

An Alliance Could Answer The Growing Threat from Google and Facebook By Evelyn M.RuIsi and Nick Bilton Apple, which has stumbled in its efforts to get into social media, has talked with Twitter in recent months about making a strategic investment in it, according to people briefed on the matter. Although apple has been hugely successful in selling phones and tablets, it has little traction in social networking, which has become a major engine of activity on the Web and on mobile devices. Social media are increasingly influencing the ways people spend their time and money — important consideration for Apple, which also sells application, games, music and movies. Apple has considered an investment in the hundreds of millions of dollars, one that could value Twitter at more than $10 billion, up from an $8.4 billion valuation last year, these people said. They declined to be identified because the discussions were private. There is no guarantee that the two companies, which are not in negotiations at the moment, will come to an agreement. But the earlier talks are a sign that they may form a stronger partnership amid intensifying competition from companies like Google and Facebook. Apple has not made many friends in social media. Its relationship with Facebook, for example, has been strained since a deal to build Facebook featured into Ping, Apple's music-centric social network, fell apart. Facebook is also aligned with Microsoft, which owns a small stake in it. And Google, an Apple rival in the phone market, has been pushing its own social network, Google Plus. 1. Using Simple Present Tense 2. Using Imperatives sentence 3. Using adverb 4. Using technical terms Generic structure of procedure text 1. Goal/Aim 2. Materials/Equipments 3. Steps/Methods Example + Exercise Making Candles Making coloured and scented candles is really quick and simple. What's more, you'll save so much money. If making candles is easy, why do you ever buy one from a shop? What you need in making candles are wax, moulds, wick, dye discs, essential oils, and a double boiler. All these materials are available from craft shops. Or if you do not want to buy them, you can improvise with an old saucepan, Pyrex jug, or even a sturdy can, in a pot of water. After providing the materials, follow this procedure or instruction in making candles! First of all, melt the wax. All wax has a flash point, so to prevent it from bursting into flames; you must melt it in a double boiler, with water at the bottom of the pan. Then, prepare the mould with the wick. Thread the wick through the mould and make sure that you leave a good few centimeters sticking out of the hole in the bottom. After that, add the scent. If you want a scented candle, add a few drops of essential oil to the melted wax. You can use any essential oil you like, as long as it doesn't contain water. Next step, pour the wax into the mould. Try and tip the wax into the mould quickly, all in one go, to minimize spillage and air bubbles. Then, release the bubbles and top it up. Releasing the air bubbles will eventually make the candle sink, so you will need to top it up with more melted wax. Finally, remove it from the mould. After four or five hours, the candle can be taken out of its mould. Your candle is now ready for display. Remember, you must always leave it for a day before lighting it.
