  • August 23, 1963 – 250,000 people – Lincoln memorial in Washington DC – how could he get so many people to come out???Did it because he stood for somethingForget about social media, I believe to have success in business, you need to stand for something importantPeople want to know who you are and what you stand for – not what you’re selling. You don’t buy nike shoes because they have the best air soles. You buy them because they represent greatness in athletics. You need to stand for something too.You need to start your movement. Just like MLK
  • What does this have to do with social media?
  • Not about facebook likes
  • Not about how many followers or retweets you have
  • It’s about standing for something importantIf you want to have success in social media… heck if you want to have success in your business, you need to stand for something important
  • If you’re like most companies… then probably nothing… but we’re going to change that today and I’ll show you have to use it in your social media to drive your movement forward
  • I Believe in entrepreneurs. It’s everything that I do.Believe in what you’re doing (passion)Believe that you can do it (confidence)Believe that it will work out (conviction)I sell products, I sell seminars, I sell advertising, I sell sponsorships… none of that matters! Because I can’t sell anything until people understand what I stand for. This is what you’re missing.People know that I careTell it in a short story – give an example of how standing for something helped change everything
  • When you figure out what you stand for, every decision in your business becomes easier – EVERYTHING – from what products to sell, who to hire, what opportunities to go after… everything…Explain the slide
  • It also keeps you motivated because you are doing something important nowHow many of you think you could be more productive in your day? Raise handsHow many of you think you could be more motivated during the day? Raise hands
  • But we’re here to talk about social media and your movementClarity makes it easy for followers to understand your message and help you spread it… because now you’re doing something important
  • We’ll get back to this at the end if we have time… for now I’m going to assume you know what you stand for because this will guide your whole social media strategy
  • Lead a movement, stand for something, and people will rally around you and buy your products and servicesKeep screen up of answers – what do you stand for? Look at the screen – and have people come up with ideas?

  • Have them tweet their one word on the screenShare it, shout it, tweet it
  • Does not come from spamming people, from telling people what your new product is, etc… from broadcasting.. From shouting. You want people to talk about you? Be worth talking about
  • WE’re going to take baby steps – this is not something you need to be afraid of – don’t do anything because it’s overwhelming and you are paralyzed by fear
  • Start off easy, gets harder and more in depth as we go – I’m really excited by #5 and hope we can all get there but even getting down the line is valuable And I’m going to share what I do, what my schedule looks like and how you can model it
  • Go and claim all your social media accounts
  • Joe Taylor, Toronto Tees
  • Even if you don’t’ know what to do with it yet, go claim your personal and company names (if they’re still available!)
  • Go claim your names – these ones at a minimum
  • Go and claim all your social media accounts
  • When I first saw twitter I thought it was stupid – people talking about their cats and what they ate for lunch
  • Rule in marketing is you want to hang out where your customers are. You want to be at that party. If your customers are red headed women then you need to be at this party. If your customers are on twitter you need to be there.
  • Go to twitter right now and see if people are talking about your industry. By now these networks are so popular that you can bet people are talking about it.
  • Go and claim all your social media accounts
  • Thank your champions – you’re not posting anything… just having a presence… this does not take long – you are not that popular… yet… 
  • What can you say once per week? Be a thought leader. Share something important. Just do it once per week. Tread lightly. You can tweet once per week. You’re not consuming all your time doing this. One video per month, share on linked in once per week – mention other networks
  • As you get results and see momentum move to daily. Don’t do this unless you’re seeing traction. Make a case to yourself that it’s worth your time doing this. Your time is important.
  • Stand for something important. Write meaningful posts because they speak a truth, not because you’re trying to market yourself
  • Mine is Believe
  • 14 languages
  • Show video
  • (insert comments from fans that say Believe)
  • (show Believe by M video?)
  • Your word applies to your entire life and your entire business but now you can start planning campaigns around the main social networks
  • I believe that you have a responsibility to support other people who are on the same mission as you.
  • Star trek fans in the house? Raise your handsMLK Lt. Uhura storyI thanked him, and I think I said something like, Dr. King, I wish I could be out there marching with you. He said, no, no, no. No, you don't understand. We don't need you on the - to march. You are marching. You are reflecting what we are fighting for. So, I said to him, thank you so much.I met Whoopi Goldberg when Gene was doing The Next Generation and she had told me when Star Trek came on she was nine years old and she said she turned the TV on and saw me and ran through the house screaming: Come quick, come quick. Theres a black lady on TV and she ain't no maid.
