What is social media?
any electronic platform that allows two way communication or other interaction with content
How do I use social media?
Information gathering Sharing & promoting Feedback & engagement
RSS is the key. Information gathering
Any online reference to SearchPuppies.com For everything I need to track: Topics I write about and blogs I read How do I use RSS? Subscribing and listening to podcasts Persistent searches on Google or Twitter
Google Reader How to I track all of that?
EMAIL items of interest or relevance to friends STAR items, effectively ‘bookmarking’ them SHARE items from my feeds, Powerful tools to organize, save and share information You can even SHARE WITH A NOTE And TAG to organize categories
Friends and colleagues can see shared items in Google Reader COLLABORATIVE news gathering & sharing and share them again. That's powerful, but so what, right?
Ok…collaboration. What else do you do?
When I share items, they go to my linkblog . Everyone with Google Reader has one.
I burned the linkblog's feed to Readburner Readburner is made up of shared feeds.
And added it to RSSMeme . RSSMeme is a clone of Readburner that caught fire while it was down.
I also pipe the feed into SocialMedian
And add that feed to Friendfeed , along with all of my other social services. (Here’s Lifehacker’s review )
What’s the point?
Information I share is digitally curated and exposed to the wider Internet. That includes TechTarget’s daily output.
That’s social media editing.
What else?
I use social bookmarks at delicious . I discover useful links through my network. And subscribe to categories with RSS.
I also stumble content with StumbleUpon . Peggy Rouse showed me the power of doing that for WhatIs.com.
I use LinkedIn to find sources & network.
I use Facebook to keep track of my friends, not for work. Possible exception: events. NYT reporters do, however, so it’s worth exploring.
