  • Guus van den Brekel Guus van den Brekel commented on Health and Medical Eduation in Second Life : IDLD2008 paris International Distant Learning Day, November 10th , The French Connection In real life I am a medical information specialist working at the Central Medical Library of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in the Netherlands. How is Second Life being used for educational, teaching and learning activities on Health and Medical issues? What is happening out there? It’s a fact that so many people and organizations have engaged over the last year and a half, that my 20 minutes on this topic is way too short to cover it all. Therefore I will try and limit myself to: • a short intro on HealthInfo Island and its projects • the movie: "Second Life and Public Health" http://www.lib.umich.edu/hsl/SecondLifePublicHealth.mov • Some additional Training and Simulation sims • Social software: from virtual world into "Social 3D Browser"? In Second Life I am Namro Orman, an Orange Dutch guy, working on several projects since March 2006 concerning Health and Medical related topics. Encouraged by the Second Life Library project and its leader Lori Bell (Lorelei Junot) I started a Medical Library in Second Life. My main focus was not just to copy exciting library services, but to explore the possibilities of interaction and communication between avatars. Interesting is also the searching for information, the presentation of the results in-world, and how to exchange that info with patrons. It was clear from the start that virtual worlds have great potential for distant learning or e-learning, but also for information literacy. From one building we grew quickly into HealtInfo Island and together with Caroline Keats (Carol Perryman in RL) we have been working on several grant-funded projects. Some projects I want to mention are: • “Providing Consumer Health Outreach and Library Programs to Virtual World Residents in Second Life” : HealthInfo Island • AIDS Information and Outreach in the Virtual World of Second Life : Karuna Island • Share the Health: Training People with Disabilities and Chronic Medical Conditions on how to Locate Quality Health Information : Virtual Ability • HealthCare Education Group :To provide community, support, collaboration opportunities and learning activities for health care educators in Second Life: Health EduIsland The growing number of new Islands around HealthInfo Island show the large interest for health information related projects. The Alliance Virtual Library project itself has grown from one small piece of land to a complete InfoIsland Archipelago of OVER 50 Island! The best practices on Health and Medical education and training are truly amazing. Let me show you an excellent intro called "Second Life and Public Health" by Anne Perorazio (Kalya Qunhua) from University of Michigan Health Sciences Libraries. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wDl5suE2Uo At the Imperial College London medical students get a tracer badge that keeps track of the progress in the diagnosis and treatment of the virtual patients. The program also makes sure students stick to the excisting protocols, like washing your hands before seeing patients. The Ann Myers Medical Center (AMMC) was created to test the possibilities of virtual training for First Life medical and nursing students. Their staff consisting of Psychologists, Hematologists, Oncologists, Radiologists, Cardiologists, Midwives, Emergency and Trauma Specialists and several nurses. It is their goal -among others- is: To assist students to become more proficient in initial exam history and physicals. They are aiming to link telemetric builds (ECG, oxygen saturation machines, etc.) to real-time outputs. The same is done by Nursing Educational Simulation (NESIM) where nursing students at Tacoma (Wash.) Community College (TCC), role-played using their avatars to select interventions for a patient suffering chest pain and cardiac dysrhythmia. Students can choose from a group of simulated real-life interventions, including oxygen hookups, medication, CPR, defibrillation, or IV therapy. Decisions made by the students are recorded and reviewed with class after the session. Learning in a multi-user virtual environment (MUVE) can be used to enhance face-to-face teaching. It can partly replace it to serve as distant learning tool and help in case of shortage of teachers, growing work pressure and increasing student numbers. It offers combinations and various ways of teaching, to serve people with different learning styles, not limited to strict class hours or location. Second Life, Web 2.0 and social software? I want to make a strong plea to all educators, teachers and trainers out there in the Metaverse to create a greater awareness in the real world. And make use of the tools that are available from within Second Life. As an information specialist I know the importance of making information publically available. And giving the data to the major search engines by publising on the Web, will make it better findable. Turning up in for instance Google search results, will create more traffic. And although Second Life itself is often referred to as Social Software, or even a Web 2.0 application, the environment still has limitations that prevent avatars in-world to really create and share in the real web 2.0 way. I believe it is essential to merge SL content with the Web to make sure others will find and see the amazing things that are created in virtual worlds. Let me list a few cool tools that are available in Second Life as a HUD To blog with snapshots from within Second Life directly to your own website: www.bloghud.com To bookmark and tag and show where you have been: www.sloog.org To send and receive Tweets, notes, geo Tags, search:  www.sltweets.com To send and receive IM’s from your major IM clients INSIDE SL, including Twitts, and Twitter, use: sl-messenger.com To publish recorded chat transcript on the Web, browsable and searchable: sleeds.org/chatlog Can the SL client serve as a new 3D Social browser by integrating web 2.0 functionality? Can it become the one interface we can do EVERYTHING in? Can Virtual Worlds offer extensive text & document management and collaboration tools to serve as added value to or even replacement for e-learning software tools like Blackboard? I have shown to you that for Health and Medical Education many people have actually found valuable applied use. Others will show you today that these developments are promising, and that it really can be done. To find and read about all health related sims and groups in Second Life, please have a look at our SLHEALTHY.WETPAINT.COM WIKI. Thank you for your attention. 2 years ago
