A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal
1. POEM SUMMARY
A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal –
William Wordsworth
2. THE POEM-STANZA 1
A slumber did my spirit seal;
I had no human fears:
She seem'd a thing that could not feel
The touch of earthly years.
3. THE POEM-STANZA 2
No motion has she now, no force;
She neither hears nor sees;
Roll'd round in earth's diurnal course
With rocks, and stones, and trees.
4. Summary of Stanza 1
In the first two lines of the poem, the poet
describes/mentions how a slumber(the death)
of his lady-love has halted his realization of
the reality. He says that it has taken him into a
dream-like state and is devoid of any fears.
5. In the next two lines the poet says that his
lady-love who is now dead has become a thing
that cannot feel anything, anymore. He says
that she will be ‘untouched by the earthly
years’, simply meaning that she would age no
more and would remain young forever in the
world and in the poets heart.
6. Summary of Stanza 2
In the first two lines of this stanza, the poet
says that since she is dead, she has no motion
and no force of any sense. She is now blind
and deaf, that is she cannot see or hear
anything happening around her.
Although, the first line gives us a hint that,
when she was alive she was full of energy and
life.
7. In the next two lines the poet says that she has
become a part of the earth’s diurnal course.
Which in a sense expresses that she has now
mixed with the earth, she is now a part of
it(burial).
She is now the same as the trees, rocks and
stones on earth, non-living, devoid of any life.
*Note: The repetition of the words stones and
rocks, which are synonyms may have been
used to bring in the reference of stone as
gravestone.*
