  • 2. The 1972 Olympics,were held in Munich,West Germany.There were 121nations participatingin 195 events.The opening ceremonyw a s o n A u g u s t 2 6 th a n dthe closing inS e p t e m b e r 1 0 th.
  • 3. These Olympics were the second ones inGermany. In this time the goverment wantedto show another Germany, so the officialmotto of the Games was ‘‘the Happy Games’’.This games were the first in which therewas a officially named mascot.

HIGHLIGHTSo Mark Spitz, a swimmer from the United States, set a world record when he won seven gold medals in a single Olympics.o Olga Korbut, a Soviet gymnast, became a media star after winning a gold medal in the team competition event.o In the final of men’s basketball, USA lost to the USSR, 50-51, in the last minute.

HIGHLIGHTSo Lasse Virén of Finland won the 5,000 and 10,000 m, a feat he repeated in the 1976 Summer Olympics.o Dave Wottle won the mens 800 m, after being last for the first 600 m, finally grabbing the lead in the final 18 metres to win by 0.03 seconds ahead of the favorite, the Soviet Yevgeny Arzhanov.o Australian swimmer Shane Gould won three gold medals, a silver, and a bronze medal at the age of 15.
