    2. What Exactly is a Diamond ?
      • A symbol of wealth, purity and love, a diamond leaves no one unmoved.
      • In mineralogy, diamond is an extremely hard, highly refractive crystalline form of carbon that is usually colorless and can be used in abrasives, and other applications.
      • Diamonds are formed at incredible depths of the earth, between 150 and 300 km below the surface and under conditions of extreme temperature and pressure.
    3. 4C's Introduction
      • Diamonds are graded and priced according to what is universally referred to as the '4C's'. They are Cut , Color , Clarity and Carat weight . Each one is a description of the various characteristics of a diamond. For example, Cut refers to the shape of the diamond, which affects its fire and brilliance. Color refers to the amount of color in the diamond (the less color a diamond has, the more valuable it is, all other factors being equal). Clarity describes the number of natural blemishes and inclusions a diamond has, and Carat Weight is simply a measurement of the diamond's weight.
    4. Carat
      • The first factor of the 4C's that most people learn about is carat - the weight of the diamond, which is also the best indication of a diamond's size.
      • A carat is the standard unit of weight for diamonds. One carat equals 1/5 of a gram, or .007 of an ounce. In other words... there are 5 carats in 1 gram and 142 carats in 1 ounce.
      • You also may have heard about "points". This does not refer to the number facets on a diamond , but rather to its weight. Just like one pound is divided into 16 ounces, one carat is divided into 100 points -- so each point is 1/100th of a carat.
    5. Clarity
      • The following chart gives an idea how each grade might look under a 10x loupe microscope:
      • Clarity is one of the important factors in diamond pricing, along with color. While the color does affect a diamond's appearance, obvious inclusions (often called "flaws") may distract the recipient's eye from a stone's overall beauty.
      • Clarity greatly varies from one diamond to another, and no two are exactly alike. Diamonds are graded and identified uniquely according to the type and number of inclusions present in them.
    6. Color
      • Color in the diamond trade usually refers to the amount of yellow in a stone, but can also indicate brown or gray and sometimes all three.
yellow, may progress to brownish. Tint visible to the naked eye. Tinted N-Z Usually yellow. Tint can be seen with the naked eye. Faintly tinted K-M Color slightly detectable. An excellent value. Near-colorless I-J Color noticeable when compared to diamonds of better grades. Near-colorless G-H Slight color detected by an expert, but still considered a colorless. Colorless F Only minute traces of color can be detected by an expert. Colorless E The highest color grade, which is extremely rare. Absolutely colorless D
    7. Cut
      • Cut of a diamond refers to how well a stone is cut and faceted to bring out the full beauty of the rough crystal. Good proportions, symmetry and polish affect the beauty of a diamond much more than perfect color or clarity.
      • Proportion is the single most important factor, because it determines the flow of light more than other quality factors. Proportions that are too deep or too shallow both allow light to leak out the bottom and lessen the amount of light that strikes your eye.
      • Because cut is so important, several grading methods have been developed to help consumers determine the cut of a particular diamond. In general, these grades are: Ideal, Premium, Very Good, Good, Fair & Poor
    8. Shape
      • Shape is one of the key features, which make diamonds radiate magnificence. The choice of the shape depends on the person’s liking and tastes, and there are some major shapes are available. There is a difference in the shape and the cut of a diamond , with cut referring to the reflection, refraction and dispersion of light to maximize its brilliance.
    9. Diamond Care
      • In addition to the 4C's there is the 5th “C” which is in the hands of the user. That is Care. For the care and maintenance of the diamond and diamond jewellery please follow the steps:
      • Store the jewelry, diamonds in separate soft cloth pouches. Diamonds are hardest known substance, a diamond scratches another diamond so if put together it will scratch each other and dull the shine and cut.
      • Avoid wearing your Diamond while doing the housework or swimming and showering.
      • Be careful when removing your jewelry to wash your hands. Do not leave your diamond ring or jewelry on the edge of a sink where it can easily slip down the drain.
    10. Diamond Care
      • After wearing, clean your diamond jewelry thoroughly with a clean, soft, slightly damp cloth. This will enhance the luster and ensure that your jewelry is clean before you store it.
      • Clean the Diamond with warm soapy water and soft brush and dry with a clean soft cloth or air dry.
      • Do not expose your precious gemstone pieces to salt water or harsh chemicals, such as chlorine or detergents.
      • Avoid exposure to sudden changes of temperature to prevent existing cracks in diamond from increasing.
      • Ask a jeweler to check the setting, fittings and mounting periodically. He can even clean it with steam or proven methods to retain the sparkle.
    11. Certification & Authentication
      • The consumer buying a diamond or any product relies a lot on certification of authenticity. There are many certificates for different items like food, chemicals, software. Even for diamonds there are certain certificates for authenticity and trust. These certificates can include diamond quality, serial number on the girdle, authenticity of natural origin, color , clarity , weight . The gemological labs issue the certificate, objectively irrespective of the diamond’s market value.
      • Reputed Labs:
      • GIA (Gemological Institute of America ) , IGI (International Gemological Institute) , EGL-US (European Gemological Laboratory USA ) , AGS (American Gem Society) , HRD (The private foundation formerly known as the Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD).
