  • And if you were university student for example or a scholar you needed to fill in special application form in order to ask for a map of a certain place. You would only get that area, not areas surrounding. Plus you had to state the interest you had. In certain cases you needed a letter from your supervisor, professor, in order to apply for the map.Currently there is nothing clear said about the publicity / or secrecy of maps in Georgian legislation, which is very well used by state agencies in cases when they either do not want to map someone some area or don’t want to give database to person requesting it.

  • 13. Use of GIS
    In post-soviet Georgia GIS was introduced within the project funded by a German government-owned development bank – KfW.
    Project aim was to create a land cadaster system and map newly privatized land in several regions. Later similar project was funded by USAID.

    There are few “actors” in GIS space in Georgia (both state and non-state/commercial).
    As well as the use of maps for various purposes are very limited and not a lot of businesses or state agencies find them useful for supporting their own activities.

  • 23. Open Maps Caucasus
    Open Maps Caucasus was formed in Tbilisi, Georgia in October, 2009 with the purpose of creating community driven, open-source, high quality maps.
    Mapping project began in 2009 and finished in 2010.
    Project aim: create most complete and up-to-date multilingual (Georgian, English, Russian) geo dataset of country.
