I saw on the news today a story of a beautiful young lady who
                                    took her life because of cyberbullying. Audrie Pott was
                                    sexually assaulted and then drawn on by her attackers and
                                    at least one picture was taken and passed around the
                                    school. She couldn’t take it anymore and hanged herself.

                                    The sad thing is that the boys who did this do not think they
                                    caused her death. They do not see the connection between
                                    the assault, the bullying and then her death.

                                     Audrie Pott’s father, mother and stepmother said they were
                                     outraged by what they see as a refusal to take responsibility
by the teens. Lawrence Pott, the girl’s father, said he was astounded that defense lawyers for
the three denied a link between the assault and the humiliating photo and his daughter’s decision
to end her life.”With no assault, with no cyberbullying, Audrie is in art class right now,” he said,
his voice breaking as he held back tears. “What they did was disgusting.”


Not all cyberbullying ends in suicide
There are some kids who are subject to this bullying and make it through but with scars. These
kids are more likely to:

   ●   use alcohol and drugs
   ●   skip school or not attend school
   ●   have poor grades
   ●   have low self­esteem
   ●   have more health problems


How can we stop cyberbullying?
I found this at stopbullying.gov website:

Talk with your kids about cyberbullying and other online issues regularly.

Know the sites your kids visit and their online activities. Ask where they’re going, what they’re
doing, and who they’re doing it with.

Tell your kids that as a responsible parent you may review their online communications if you
think there is reason for concern.

Installing parental control filtering software or monitoring programs are one option for monitoring
your child’s online behavior, but do not rely solely on these tools.
Have a sense of what they do online and in texts. Learn about the sites they like. Try out the
devices they use.

Ask for their passwords, but tell them you’ll only use them in case of emergency.

Ask to “friend” or “follow” your kids on social media sites or ask another trusted adult to do so.

Encourage your kids to tell you immediately if they, or someone they know, is being cyberbullied.

Explain that you will not take away their computers or cell phones if they confide in you about a
problem they are having..


How to Report Cyberbullying
When cyberbullying happens, it is important to document and report the behavior so it can be
addressed.

Take these steps immediately:

   ●   Don’t respond to and don’t forward cyberbullying messages.
   ●   Keep evidence of cyberbullying.
   ●   Record the dates, times, and descriptions of instances when cyberbullying has occurred.
   ●   Save and print screenshots, emails, and text messages. Use this evidence to report
       cyberbullying to web and cell phone service providers.
   ●   Block the person who is cyberbullying.
   ●   Report cyberbullying to online service providers
   ●   Report cyberbullying to law enforcement
   ●   Report cyberbullying to schools

It is up to all of us to stop bullying. No child should be afraid to go to school. No child should be
subject to this type of humiliation.
