    Notes on slide 1

http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/04/inside-bill-gates-office-workstyle-of.html http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/05/microsoft-lab-showcases-workplaces-of.html People in the future will read more at home (due to the increased amount of online content). More people will work from home in the future The information economy is the primary economical driver in the UK and therefore requires the assimilation of information as knowledge so it can be repurposed for innovative income Historically, the reading room or office within the home is an architectural tradition that every culture has at one time adopted (and has only recently been separated from the home with the emergence of the centralised 21 st century office space). People do not enjoy reading in their current computer workspace environs Why can people stand to sit and watch a TV screen for hours on end and not a computer screen? <-social phenomena, screen detail (digital ink), physical ergonomics, spatial relation? “ Reading” is more than just ‘textual reading’, it is also ‘audio reading (“comprehension”)’, ‘image reading (interpretation)’, and ‘video reading (analysis)’. Because of the seamless ‘digital page’ where bytes of ‘text’ are the same as bytes for ‘video’, all information –be it audio, image, video or text- are all just digital objects on the page. Multiple learning outputs (audio, visual and kinesthetic) are required by the future scholar/worker as it provides an alternative means of taking in information, which breaks the monotony of a single learning output (“reading all day”) “ Reading” –in the present and ever growing “social” Web 2.0 presence- will become synonymous with “writing”, or rather editing, updating and note-taking, e.g. reading/writing will take place algorithmically as a synchronously activity. The current state of “reading” using PDFs, DOCs is not acceptable as an enhanced digital version of the physical proxy, i.e. we are not taking advantage of the added-value principle of reading in a digital environment and interface (fades, zoom, wipe, transparent, dynamic, share, transpose, etc) [“A million book library”, by Crane]
