1. 1. University of Michigan
One of the world's premiere research institutions, in 2009 Michigan was awarded more than $1,000,000,000 in research funding. Of that total, $64,354,926 was awarded by the Department of Defense. Two examples of DARPA-funded research include the Flying Fish, the first unmanned seaplane to perform take-off and landing on water, and the Cyborg Moth, a project that turns moths into unmanned aerial vehicles.
Nearly all of U-M's 19 schools, colleges and divisions rank among the best in their fields. According to the 2009 US News and World Report rankings, the engineering school ranks in the 10.
Engineering Department Undergraduate Rank
Aerospace Engineering3
Computer Engineering7
Electrical Engineering6
Materials Science4
Mechanical Engineering3
Source: US News and World Report
The University of Michigan offers 600 degree programs and a large pool of talent.
U-M Graduates 2009BSMSPhD
Electrical engineering1193614
Aerospace engineering1345021
Mechanical engineering24312450
Materials engineering46149
Eastern Michigan University
Eastern Michigan University is a state college that offers degree programs in science and technology disciplines. In 2008 Eastern was recognized as a “Best Midwestern College” in for the fifth straight year.
Eastern Michigan University’s Coatings Research Institute researches polymers, coatings, paints, and nanomaterials. Current research includes improving the durability of U.S. Air Force plane surfaces under a $1 million contract from the Department of Defense. Researchers hope to develop a durable primer coating that maintains flexibility over a broad range of temperatures.
In addition, the National Security Agency has recognized Eastern’s Information Assurance program as a National Center of Academic Excellence.
Defense Related Firms in Ann Arbor
A number of firms in the Ann Arbor area are involved with defense-related product research, development, and production: Cybernet Systems is developing an automated tactical ammunition classification system for the Department of Defense; Arotech produces a tactical vehicle driving simulator for the U.S. Army National Design Center; Solidica is developing embedded sensors for the U.S. Marine Corps; and Adaptive Materials provides portable fuel-cell batteries for U.S. Special Ops.
Defense-Related Firms in Ann Arbor
COMPANYDESCRIPTIONCybernet SystemsArtificial intelligence, human computer interactionSoar TechnologySoftware, intelligencePixel Velocity3-D and 2-D imaging sensorsM-Bots, Inc.Small highly-mobile robotsPowerix TechnologiesPortable power for military, otherDatMapPredictive algorithm for mobile data mapping of explosive devicesNovoDynamicsEnterprise content management for language recognitionQuantum SignalIntelligence sensing and data analysisEncelHeat to electricity energy cellDexter Research CenterThin film and silicon sensors and detectorsAdaptive MaterialsPortable solid oxide fuel cell systemGeneral DynamicsAdvanced information systemsAnn Arbor Sensor SystemsThermal infrared imaging cameraSolidicaWireless network sensorsTranslumeMicrofluidic chip manufactureMichigan AerospaceOptics, optimechanicalInmetManufacture microwave sensorsProtomaticPrototype, short-run manufactureAdvanced PhotonixSemiconductor manufacturerOptiMetricsOptics and electro-optical software, researchArgon STSystems engineering and developmentKaiser OpticalSpectrometers, analyzers, optical componentsL-3Design, manufacture optics productsArotechReal time simulation
