  1. 1. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT © Copyright 2014 The Detail Devils ®
  2. 2. WHAT IS PPE? © Copyright 2014 The Detail Devils ® PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT [ˈpəˈs(ə)n(ə)l prəˈtɛktɪv ɪˈkwɪpm(ə)nt] Noun Protective attire, helmets, goggles, or other equipment intended to protect the wearer's body from harm.
  3. 3. WHAT IS PPE? © Copyright 2014 The Detail Devils ® The purpose of PPE is to minimise worker exposure to hazards when working and other controls are not practicable nor effective enough to reduce these risks to lower levels.
  4. 4. DEFINITIONS IN PPE © Copyright 2014 The Detail Devils ® Foot protection Footwear should provide adequate protection from injury and comfortable support for the feet. Hand and arm protection Hand and arm protection may be required while handling abrasive, sharp or pointed objects or while working with vibrating equipment, such as pneumatic drills. Body protection Body protection may include, overalls, aprons, coveralls, life jackets, harnesses and back supports.
  5. 5. © Copyright 2014 The Detail Devils ® Foot protection This includes anti-static and conductive footwear, safety boots/shoes & Wellington boots. All of these can be supplied with steel toe-caps. Hand and arm protection This includes wrist cuffs and armlets, gloves, gauntlets & barrier cream. Body protection This includes overalls, aprons, coveralls, life jackets, harnesses, body armour & back supports. PPE EXAMPLES
  6. 6. DEFINITIONS IN PPE © Copyright 2014 The Detail Devils ® Skin protection Workers who are required to work outdoors and are subjected to the sun’s rays should wear skin protection to reduce UVR exposure. Also, workers in areas where there are insects should be provided with an adequate insect repellent. Respiratory protection Any device that is worn by the user to reduce or eliminate exposure to harmful contaminants through the inhalation of said contaminants. They should be worn when there is exposure to dust, fumes or vapours in the workplace
  7. 7. © Copyright 2014 The Detail Devils ® Skin protection This includes sun protection (SPF 50+), hats, sunburn cream, long sleeved clothes, as well as insect repellent, and barrier creams. Respiratory protection The first type of respiratory protection supplies clean air (such as airline respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus). The second type filters contaminated air (eg dust masks, gas filters and particle filters P1 and P3). PPE EXAMPLES
  8. 8. DEFINITIONS IN PPE © Copyright 2014 The Detail Devils ® Head protection A safety helmet must be worn where there is risk that a person may be struck on the head by a falling object, strike his/her head against a fixed object or inadvertently come into contact with electrical hazards. Eye Protection Typical hazards might include flying particles, dust, splashing substances, harmful gases, vapours, aerosols, & high-intensity radiation from welding operations, lasers, trans-illuminators and strong heat sources. Hearing protection This type of protection must be worn by workers who are likely to be exposed to potential noise hazard areas.
  9. 9. PPE EXAMPLES © Copyright 2014 The Detail Devils ® Head protection This includes industrial scalp protectors, caps/hair nets and industrial safety helmets (hard hats). Eye Protection Safety glasses, goggles, eye shields and face shields protect the eyes from projectiles, and chemical splashes as well as welding flash. Hearing protection Ear plugs that are inserted in the ear canal, ear muffs and semi-inserts which cover the entrance to the ear canal are designed to reduce the exposure to noise.
  10. 10. TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PPE, CONSIDER: © Copyright 2014 The Detail Devils ® Compatibility – If multiple types of PPE are needed (e.g. a hard hat with ear muffs) are the items compatible? Standards – Does the personal protective equipment comply with relevant Australian (or equal) Standards? Supplier opinion – Can the supplier confirm that the PPE is appropriate for work and workplace conditions? Requirements – Does the equipment pass an evaluation of the risk and performance requirements of PPE?
