  • 3. BEFORE WE BEGIN Acting Like Men ! Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Dress for action like a man; I will question you and you make it known to me. Job 38:2-3
  • 4. 1 TIMOTHY 1:1-3
  • 5. Who is Paul?
  • 6. Paul’s life is one of the best pieces of evidence for the Resurrection.
  • 7. From Church Terrorist to Church Planter
  • 8. Who is Timothy?
  • 9. Paul’s Child in the Faith
  • 10. This letter is to a person, not to a church.
  • 11. This letter is to a pastor, not just a random dude.
  • 12. Charge certain persons.
  • 13. Any different doctrine.
  • 14. Different than what?
  • 15. ACTS 19:1-20
  • 16. We have not even heard there was a Holy Spirit.
  • 17. The church in Ephesus began with incomplete teaching. ! This becomes a theme.
  • 18. Incomplete teaching. Attempted false miracles. Demonic powers. ! You & I would not call this a solid church start.
  • 19. But then there is verse 17.
  • 20. Incomplete teaching. Attempted false miracles. Demonic powers. ! And still people come to Jesus.
  • 21. How?
  • 22. Grace.
  • 23. Grace is not something that we conjure up, nor is it something we know to ask for.
  • 24. Grace is the result of the work of God.
  • 25. But grace is not only a result, it’s also a cause.
  • 26. These new believers forsake their old lives.
  • 27. And the Gospel continues to reign.
  • 28. But we’ve yet to figure out what Paul’s true teaching is.
  • 29. EPHESIANS 2:1-10
  • 30. You were dead.
  • 31. You can’t resurrect yourself.
  • 32. But God.
  • 33. By grace we have been saved.
  • 34. And it is out of that grace that we do good works.
  • 35. Dear Ephesus: It is not your repentance, your burning of our idols, or even my teaching that brings you to new life.
  • 36. Dear Ephesus: It is out of the grace of God that you live out the works of God.
  • 37. Dear Men of Hillside: It is not your repentance, your burning of our idols, or even our teaching that brings you to new life.
  • 38. Dear Men of Hillside: It is out of the grace of God that you live out the works of God.
  • 39. Godly men build their lives on the grace of God.
  • 40. We know how this story ends.
  • 41. REVELATION 2:1-5
  • 42. You can’t bear teaching that isn’t of grace.
  • 43. You haven’t grown weary of the Gospel and its effects.
  • 44. But.
  • 45. You have abandoned your first love.
  • 46. Do the works you did at first.
  • 47. Get rid of your idols. Center your life on grace.
  • 48. Godly men center their lives on grace, burning their idols in their white-hot affections for Christ.
