Finding a Job or InternshipWhere do I go to find off campus jobs and internships for DePaul students?

Welcome to DePaul.ExperienceOnline recruiting system for DePaul students and alumni:http://depaul.experience.com/•  Every student has a Log-in and password –  Username: DPU and seven digit DePaul ID (e.g. dpu0123456) –  Password: DePaul•  To find off campus jobs go to one-click searches. For on campus interview opportunities select jobs with interview schedules.Tip: Check calendar regularly for all events, including OCI, Company Information Sessions, Employer Insights Workshops, Pre-Interview Receptions and more.

Eligibility Requirements•  Current DePaul student in good standing applying for jobs and internships•  Graduate student applying for OCI jobs and internships who desires graduate level experience•  Alumnus who meets employment qualifications•  Complete the OCI Online Orientation session and pass the quiz

Application Guidelines•  You must apply for and agree to interview only for positions that you are interested in, qualified for, and wish to pursue•  If you receive and accept a job offer you must immediately withdraw your application in DePaul.Experience before the application deadline•  Call DePaul’s Employer Relations team if you have questions about an opportunity: 312-362-5201

Misrepresentation•  You are required to behave ethically throughout the job search process•  All data in DePaul.Experience must be true and accurate: GPA, major or minor, activities or honors/awards, student status, employment dates –  Employers verify details on your resume –  Make sure your LinkedIn profile is updated and accurate•  Do not allow anyone else to apply for a position using your DePaul.Experience account•  If you misrepresent yourself, you will be referred to the University Administration for violation of the Student Conduct Code

The On Campus Interviewing (OCI) Process That was easy! I applied and was accepted for an interview…. What’s next?

General Information•  Interview suites at DPC, Suite 9600 –  Check in at 9700 first before each interview•  OCI takes place during Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters•  Seeks to provide entry-level full-time post graduate positions and internships for current students

Events hosted by Employers•  Strongly suggested that you attend as many as possible –  Learn more about the company –  Network with recruiters – they want to connect with you! –  Gather information to craft informed interview questions•  If you sign up on Experience you are confirmed and expected to attend•  Employers use sign-in sheets and can favor those who attend their events•  If the event is coordinated by the employer let them know if you cannot make it and provide explanation

Cancellation Policy•  You must withdraw your application and decline the invitation to interview no later than 8:00 a.m., 2 business days prior to OCI date•  If you must cancel due to an emergency less than 48 hours before the interview date, you cannot cancel through DePaul.Experience because the schedule is frozen –  You must notify Alma Ceballos of any cancellations within 48 hours of interview date, and provide an explanation 312-362-5789 or amendez@depaul.edu

Last Minute Cancellations & Missed InterviewsBoth count as “no shows” and both are a very serious problem Internally, a "no show" is unfair to other students who could have used that opportunity to interview with the employer. Externally, "no shows" reflect poorly on the quality and professionalism of our students and waste the time and resources of employers.

No Show Penalties•  DePaul.Experience account de-activated effective immediately and will receive ‘Missed Interview Explanation Form’ (MIEF) via email –  http://www.careercenter.depaul.edu/general/forms/missed_interview.aspx•  Must return MIEF within 3 business days, along with email of apology addressed to the employer•  DePaul.Experience account will not be reactivated until form is returned and apology email received•  Two or more offenses in one academic year will result in your DePaul.Experience account being deactivated and OCI privileges revoked for remainder of year

Interview Tips

Prepare for the Interview•  Research company and position –  Re-read job description –  Visit company website –  Research company in LinkedIn, Glassdoor.com•  Review your resume –  Be able to tell your career story using your resume –  See a Peer Career Advisor or Career Advisor•  Prepare questions to ask interviewer –  3 or 4 non generic questions; use information from the company research

Practice Interviewing!•  Interviewing is not a natural talent—everyone needs practice•  Most interviews are behavioral –  Employers believe that past performance is indicative of future behavior –  Typically look at core competencies—leadership, problem solving, conflict resolution, team work, flexibility and adaptability to environments, challenges, achievements

Day of Interview•  Business attire –  Men and women should wear suits –  Limited accessories and fragrances•  Firm handshake and make eye contact•  Bring extra copies of resume, cover letter, and other materials required by the employer –  Bring an updated copy if things have changed since you applied for the position –  Be prepared to talk about everything on your resume

S.H.A.R.E ModelThe most commonly used model in behavioral interviewing:•  S: Situation•  H: Hindrance –  Describe situation and challenge/task. From previous job/internship, group project, volunteer experience, or any relevant event•  A: Action –  What action did you take to overcome the hindrance in that situation. Be descriptive!•  R: Result –  What was the result of your action? What happened? What did you accomplish?•  E: Evaluation –  What did you learn?

Follow-up After Interview•  Ask about next steps/hiring timeline –  Politely ask at the end of interview•  Ask for business card or contact information after interview –  It is important to know who you interviewed with for the thank you note and in case of second round interview or if you receive an offer for the position•  Send thank you note –  Within 24 hours of interview via email •  Email thank you notes are appropriate especially if employer is making decision soon –  Check grammar and spelling – have a second set of eyes review your note

The Job OfferI aced the interview and received an offer…. Now what?

Accepting Job Offers•  Can be verbal or written•  You can expect to have a reasonable amount of time to make a decision, and most employers are willing to extend that time if you ask for it.•  Be specific about the extra time you need, and dont fail to meet the new deadline. Use that time to make sure that you are making the best decision. It is a great opportunity to check in with your career advisor or mentor with questions.

Accepting Job Offers•  Consider what will be expected of you on the job, clarify the terms of employment•  Discuss any questions/doubts with the Career Center BEFORE you accept or decline an offer•  Only accept offers you are truly interested in, and only accept ONE offer•  If you accept the position, cancel all other interviews and inform other potential employers that they should remove you from their list of applicants

Reneging on Job OffersDefined: –  Accepting a job offer and later turning down the opportunity OR accepting multiple offers that will prevent you from honoring your commitment to all parties involved. •  Serious matters: You do not want to damage your professional image. •  Will result in punitive measures that will be determined on a case by case basis by the Career Center staff

Reneging on Job OffersBe aware that the single most serious ethical breach in your jobsearch is reneging on a job acceptance. When you accept an offer, you should have every intention of honoring that commitment. Accepting an offer only as a precautionary measure is misleading to the employer and may restrict opportunities for others who are genuinely interested in the employer. –  If you accept an offer or decide on graduate or professional studies, you should notify The Career Center and withdraw from the recruiting process immediately. You should also let employers who are actively considering you for a position know of your decision.
