  • MagnaVu A New Standard of Living for the Dental Professional
  • MagnaVu
    • Introduction
    • Statistics
    • Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD)
    • Mechanisms Leading to MSD
    • Prevention of MSD – MagnaVu
    • Additional Benefits of MagnaVu
  • Introduction
    • 1960's were years of transition in dentistry
    • Dentists realized that it was healthier for them to work sitting down, with the patient in a reclining position to better access the oral cavity
    • Four-handed dentistry, sterilization and other technological advances are now the standard of profession
    • Heavy workloads, ergonomics, predispositions and equipment selections are key factors today in determining a dentist’s wellbeing
    • Posture and ergonomics are fundamental in the
    • prevention of musculoskeletal disorders
  • Statistics
    • 75% of dentists and hygienists suffer from musculoskeletal disorders that affect occupational health and the quality of practice life
    • MSDs are the leading reason for early retirement among dentists
    • 29.5% of dentists cut their career short because they are in pain
    • Source: 1997 Study, The Institute of Dental Ergonomics
  • Statistics
    • 70% of dental students experience chronic musculoskeletal pain by their third year of dental school *
    • Main contributing factor to MSD is working posture: stretching, reaching, leaning and awkward movement patterns, which cause dentists to move out of neutral alignment of the body
    • Equipment selection, muscle weakness, debilitation, training techniques, work habits and workload have all been blamed for poor seating posture in dentists
    • Back and neck pain is one of the leading causes of lost work time, second only to the common cold
    * January 2005 Study, Journal of the American Dental Association
  • Statistics
    • 271 students from all four years at the University of California San Francisco School of Dentistry were included in this study, an overall response rate of 85 percent.
  • Defining Musculoskeletal Disease: … a disorder of the muscles, tendons, peripheral nerves or vascular system not directly resulting from an acute or instantaneous event (e.g., slips or falls)
    • The most common MSDs result from prolonged static postures in dentistry including:
    • Chronic low back pain , referring into the hip, buttock or one leg
    • Tension neck syndrome , pain between shoulder blades, possible tingling or numbness in one arm or hand
    • Trapezius myalgia , pain, tenderness and muscle spasms in the upper trapezius muscles
    • Rotator cuff impingement, pain in the shoulder on overhead reaching
  • Mechanisms Leading to MSD
    • Work in front of and below the operator’s eye level leads to a forward head and rounded shoulder posture
    • Forward-head-and-rounded-shoulder posture also increases forces on the upper neck muscles and spinal vertebral disks
    • Low back strain is a common diagnosis among workers who must sit in a slightly flexed forward position
    • Under normal conditions, damaged tissue is repaired during rest periods, but in dentistry, damage often exceeds the rate of repair due to insufficient rest periods
    • To protect the stressed area from further injury, the body uses another part of the damaged muscle to maintain the body position
  • Mechanisms Leading to MSD
  • MagnaVu Magnified Video Dentistry Founded by a group of leading innovators in Dental Imaging products who saw a need to provide dentists a more modern solution that would allow both dentists and staff to perform most dental procedures from a correct, heads-up, more relaxed posture position , similar to medical surgery.

Most offices start using the scope under low magnification for simple procedures and to inspect the work performed. After a week or two, 50% of procedures are done with MagnaVu and after four to six weeks, most offices work up to 80%.
