    • PROGRAM DESCRIPTION and LEARNING OBJECTIVES Misunderstandings with patients frequently stem from poor communication. This can be especially significant when obtaining informed consent from patients. An effective risk management strategy for dental practices is to utilize effective communication techniques and apply them to the informed consent process. Subsequent documentation in the patient’s record that informed consent was obtained is important and legally required by the Iowa Dental Board. In addition, this program will present the Iowa Dental Board’s Record Keeping Rules and current common record keeping problems the Board is experiencing. The course is designed for all members of the dental team involved in patient care. Strategies will be discussed to improve written and verbal communication and document that informed consent was obtained from patients. This course is approved for continuing education credit by the Iowa Dental Board. At the completion of this presentation and after review of the handout materials, participants should be able to: Identify how poor communication between dental personnel and the patient can lead to problems in practice and complaints to the Iowa Dental Board, Implement new techniques to improve communication with patients, Describe the record keeping requirements as specified in the Iowa Dental Practice Act, Evaluate how well a dental practice documents findings, diagnoses, and treatment plan information, Describe the essential requirements for informed consent, and Implement techniques to document informed consent with patients.
