  • Introduce David and myself and explain my background – how I ended up chairing such a session on behalf of the ISDH Give brief history of ISDH – including purpose of workshop – to promote the team approach to Special Care Dentistry – to identify educational requirements within the disciplines – and to propose the creation of a networking group to assist its members….
  • Formally established in 2002 Executive committee consists of the President, the Immediate Past-President, the President Elect, the Honorary Secretary, the Honorary Membership Secretary and the Honorary Treasurer Voluntary organisation made up of enthusiastic members of the dental team who have an interest, experience & knowledge in the area of Special Care Dentistry.
  • Links with voluntary organisations who represent disabled people Consult with these groups in identifying their specific oral health needs Look at the barriers that currently prevent disabled people from accessing oral health Encourage further development of undergraduate & post-graduate education of the dental team Encourage a level of research & development within SCD of which introduces ‘best practice’ into the provision of oral health services for our disabled clients

    • 5. Special Care Dentistry - Specialty
      • The GDC (UK) agreed in December 2005 to the principle of the establishment of a Specialist List in Special Care Dentistry (SCD). We understand that the Council meeting this month will be asked to finalise this decision and hope to see a ‘Specialist List’ in SCD in the latter part of this year.

      • post-qualification in Special Care Dental Nursing

      • Dentists – Specialist post-graduate training
    • 9. CPD Requirements for DCPs
      • 150 hours CPD in each 5 year cycle
      • 50 hours verifiable
          • Must include 3 core subject areas
            • medical emergencies – 10 hours (minimum)
            • disinfection & decontamination – 5 hours (minimum)
            • radiography & radiation protection – 5 hours (minimum)
    • 10.
      • An annual statement of both verifiable & general CPD hours must be completed. A declaration form will be sent to you shortly after the end of each year of the cycle.
      • After the end of a five year cycle a random number of registrants will be selected and asked to produce their CPD records, including documentary proof of their verifiable CPD, for audit.
    • 11. CPD Requirements for DCPs
      • All clinical staff should also keep up to date in
      • - legal & ethical issues
      • - handling complaints
      • Verifiable CPD must have:
        • Concise educational aims & objectives
        • Clear anticipated outcomes
        • A quality control system to obtain feedback
    • 12. Post-Qualification in Special Care Dental Nursing
      • Course in place since 2000
      • Available in various centres in UK & N.I.
      • 309 successful candidates to date
