3. 1. The Council of the University invites applications for the post of Senior Lecturer (Clinical) in
Restorative Dentistry in the School of Dental Sciences. The post will be predominantly based at the
Dental School, but all staff are expected to take part in teaching in outreach locations throughout the
North West. The post is a full time appointment and is not available for job-sharing.
2. The appointee will work under the direction of the Teaching Lead for Restorative Dentistry (Dr AJ
Preston) and will contribute to the integrated teaching of restorative dentistry. The appointee will be
expected to undertake research in an area associated with restorative dentistry. This research must be
to a level of national recognition.
The appointee must be able to teach all aspects of Restorative Dentistry to the standard required by the
General Dental Council for the graduation of new students. They must also be able to teach on the
Taught Postgraduate courses. In addition to providing lectures and tutorials the postholder will supervise
students treating patients on the combined restorative clinics. They must be prepared to be a personal
tutor and to take part in the day to day running of Restorative Dentistry and the Dental School.
Although this is a post with a main emphasis in undergraduate teaching in the area of Restorative
Dentistry, the remainder of the time will be spent on CPD education, research, administration and

takes a problem-based learning approach. All new staff are expected to be trained as PBL tutors and
to take part in the programme. All academic staff are obliged to take part in the formal and informal

4. Primary responsibilities of the Appointment:
• To support the core undergraduate teaching activities of the team in Restorative Dentistry
through course design, administration, delivery and resultant publications
• To support the teaching of Restorative Dentistry to postgraduate students within the dental
school and contribute to the Departmental CPD activity
• To be involved in pursuing grant support for research activities

scientific and academic ability
7. Management Structure of the Dental School
The School of Dental Sciences is a single School within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The
Head of School is Professor Callum Youngson. The School has four Directorates: Undergraduate
Dentistry, Dental Care Professionals, Continuing Professional Development and Postgraduate
Dentistry. The Director of Research is Dr Janet Risk.
There are currently 2 main research themes. Clinical Dental Sciences and Basic Dental Sciences.
Areas of expertise within these themes encompass; Oral Microbiology, Oral Cancer and the
Pathophysiology of Salivary Secretion (Dr J Risk); Mechanisms of Oral Development and Disease
(Professor A Brook), Plaque-related Diseases (Professor S Higham) and Dental Public Health (Dr RV
Harris). This provides a world-class team who feature strongly in oral research and associated fields
Within the University as a whole, the Dental School has very strong links within the Faculty of Health
and Life Sciences. The current Dean of the Faculty, Professor John Caldwell, is actively developing
themed research throughout the Faculty.
The Dental School has 35 full-time academic staff supported by over 100 part-time staff with many
honorary appointments held by hospital staff. Within the Faculty, the Dental School is represented on
the Dean of Faculty’s Support Group, and The Faculty Management Team.
The School has its own Board of Studies which reports to the, recently restructured, Faculty of Health
and Life Sciences for curricular and research matters. Strong links exist between the Dental School
and Dental Hospital. The Clinical Director is Professor Anne Field.
In 2004-5, the Dental School was successful in bids for ASNs in Dentistry to HEFCE and the
Department of Health. In consequence, the School has expanded to an annual intake of 75 Home/EU
undergraduates; 60 on the 5-year BDS programme and 15 on the 4-Year Graduate Entry BDS. Since
September 2007, 32 undergraduates also annually study the University of Liverpool BDS degree
through a consortium arrangement with the University of Central Lancashire leading on delivery. The
Dental School has a quality assurance role in monitoring the delivery. These changes mean that
Liverpool becomes the largest undergraduate Dental School outside of London.
8. Research in the Unit of Restorative Dentistry
Members of staff in Restorative Dentistry are expected to focus their research within the two broad
research areas stated previously. The appointee will be encouraged to undertake research using
expertise available within the Faculty.

10. Clinical facilities
Restorative Dentistry at the Dental School is taught in 3 multi-unit clinics each with 20 chairs and a 4 th
clinic with 14 chairs, 5 of which are specifically equipped for endodontics. A further 19 chairs are
present in the area where removable prosthodontic treatment is provided predominately. There are
several side surgeries for consultations and specialist treatment. The School has two newly
constructed and comprehensively equipped Clinical Skills Laboratories. The Skills Laboratories also
have a good complement of specialised models and instruments for the teaching of restorative
techniques. This facility has been updated and expanded in the early phase of the expansion.
At Liverpool the undergraduate dental students begin their clinical training with phantom head
teaching in the first year and progress to the treatment clinics in the second year. Students are
timetabled to attend the Restorative clinic at later stages of the 2nd year and throughout their 3rd, 4th,
and 5th years. They undertake treatment in outreach clinics within General Dental Services and
Salaried Dental Services during the 4th and 5th years.
Office accommodation and computer facilities are available within the School. The Dental School has
with two large lecture theatres, seminar rooms, office accommodation, extensive IT support and well-
equipped laboratories. The School is in close proximity to the Royal Liverpool Hospital and the main

6. The University of Liverpool
The University was established in 1881 as a University College, and received its Royal Charter in
1903. The University has developed to occupy a single precinct of 35 hectares, which lies close to
the heart of the city. The University has three Faculties, and the School of Biological Sciences is a
member of the Science Faculty.
There are 13,620 undergraduate students and 2,740 postgraduate students. The University enjoys a
very high research standing, and in 2006-2007 attracted an estimated £79 million external research
income, placing it amongst the leading universities.
Liverpool University Dental Hospital
Liverpool University Dental Hospital (LUDH) is an integral part of the RLBUHT and forms one of the
clinical directorates of the Trust. Located on the main teaching hospital campus alongside the Royal
Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool University Dental Hospital (LUDH) occupies a self-contained
modern building on Pembroke Place, originally constructed in the late 1960s. It has undergone a
series of major refurbishments in recent years which have significantly extended and upgraded its
surgeries, teaching clinics and patient waiting areas.
The Liverpool University Dental Hospital (LUDH) provides a regional service to the inhabitants of
Merseyside covering the full range of dental specialties, including oral surgery, oral medicine,
paediatric and restorative dentistry, orthodontics and special care dentistry. There is also a Dental
Public Health Unit. A dedicated unit for the treatment of children under relative analgesia was opened
in 2007 and a new clinical treatment/research wing has recently been completed to provide additional
sedation and oral surgery clinics in a purpose-built extension. There is a Dental A&E Department
which provides emergency treatment for a limited number of patients and training for dental students.
The Hospital has approximately 160 dental units, including six 20-unit teaching clinics, consultation
and teaching suites for all the dental specialties and its own dental technical and histopathology
laboratories. The ground floor houses the Hospital's Accident & Emergency department, alongside
surgeries for dental extractions, minor oral surgery and designated clinics for the treatment of
medically compromised patients and patients with latex allergy.
There is a well designed General Anaesthetic extractions surgery and recovery area and operating
facilities for day case patients requiring treatment under general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation.
There are approximately 60,000 outpatient attendances per year, plus 9,000 self-referrals through the
A&E department. Specialist departments include Restorative Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry,
Orthodontics, Special Care Dentistry and Oral Medicine and a Consultant-led Dental Sedation Unit.
There are strong links with the Regional Maxillofacial Unit (MFU) at Aintree Hospitals Trust, a leading
centre nationally for the treatment of oral cancer. A number of consultants from the MFU have
sessions in the Dental Hospital.
The City of Liverpool
The City of Liverpool provides an exciting social, cultural, historical and environmental milieu. The
city centre has an excellent shopping centre, a great variety of restaurants, clubs, pubs and bars, and,
of course, lies close to the River Mersey with its historic docks. Liverpool boasts excellent art
galleries and museums (including The Walker Art Gallery and The Tate in the North), theatres,
cinemas, and the renowned Philharmonic Hall, home to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

13. Honorary contract
Appointment to this post is conditional on an appropriate honorary consultant contract within the
Royal Liverpool and Boardgreen University Hospital Trust. The appointee will be required to have a
medical check before being issued with a contract.
The post attracts a special HEFCE-funded “Golden Hello” to the value of £9K, subject to individuals
satisfying the eligibility criteria, as follows:-
a) Has a significant teaching commitment
b) Has a contract for a period of more than 12 months
c) Has become a member of the Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ILT) or
gained an award from an ILT accredited course in the last year, or is working towards becoming a
member of ILT or gaining an award from an ILT accredited course. Alternatively has, or is
working towards, some other recognised teaching award. This could be an award at the
institution they are to be employed at.
d) Has not previously taught HE at an institution that receives funds from a UK funding council.
As the work involves working with young people and / or vulnerable adults, the successful candidate

8. 14. This is a permanent post, but appointment will normally be for a probationary period of four years.
Confirmation in appointment will be made at the end of this period provided that the Review
Committee for the Faculty is satisfied that the appointee has fulfilled the criteria for confirmation.
These criteria are:
• that the appointee has applied himself or herself to research and the advancement of
knowledge as shown by work completed or in an active state of preparation,
• that he or she has satisfactorily undertaken such teaching and taken such part in University

16. The Occupational Pension Scheme associated with this appointment is the Universities Superannuation
Scheme (USS). Under the provisions of this scheme a member of staff currently contributes at a rate of
6.35% of his or her pensionable salary and the University such sum as may be required to maintain the
full benefit of the scheme. Employees of the Faculty of Medicine who at the time of their appointment
have been a member of the National Health Service Pension Scheme (NHSPS) in the previous 12
months, may apply to continue their membership of the NHSPS during their employment at the

be asked to investigate a transfer payment and will provide, on actuarial advice, a proposal for a number
of years' credit in USS which such payment would secure. The member of staff is at liberty either to
accept this or elect to deal with his or her accrued benefits as determined by the rules of his or her

9. 18. (a) The University will normally provide financial assistance to newly appointed members of staff
(excluding research staff funded from outside sources) who are required to relocate within a
reasonable distance of the University.
(b) Claims for relocation from any point in the British Isles
In normal circumstances claims for reimbursement will not exceed;
(i) The full costs of removing furniture and personal effects to the new area; costs of
storage incidental to the move will normally be met for a period not exceeding two
weeks. The member of staff must personally obtain three written quotations from
independent removal companies, if appropriate, or alternatively are permitted to submit
claims for carrying out their own removal. The member of staff may choose any of the
three companies, however the University will only reimburse the cost of the lowest
quotation. The member of staff must submit a receipted invoice.
(ii) Any identified costs connected with the move up to a maximum of one month’s gross
basic salary (as payable on commencing the appointment attracting eligibility to
removal expenses) as specified in your letter of appointment or Statement of Terms
and Conditions. Such other expenses may include legal fees, estate agents and
surveyors fees, preliminary visits to the area to view prospective properties, stamp
duty, fixtures and fittings etc. Storage costs for furniture and personal effects may be
reimbursed beyond two weeks from within the one month’s gross basic salary
claimable by the member of staff.
(c) Claims for relocation from Abroad
Claims for reimbursement will be considered individually on their merits by the Director of
Human Resources but will as far as possible be in line with the procedure set out in (b) above.
(d) In making a claim for removal expenses a member of staff must:-
(i) have received and accepted a written offer of employment with the University.
(ii) acknowledge that should the appointment not last for a period of three years, the
University retains the right to reclaim all, or a proportion of the payment made.

The requirement to repay removal expenses will be waived where a member of staff leaves
