The church survived several earthquakes but not the war.On March 19, 1945, the church was bombed and the twobelfries were destroyed and the church was partiallydamaged. There are originally 36 bells of different sizesbut destroyed during the way when the Japanese used thetower as machine gun nests and shelled by Americanartillery. Under the supervision of Gov. Timoteo Consingand the parish priest Rev. Manuel Alba, the fortress wasreconstructed with the support of the Molo population.The church contains remains of many prominent Ilonggopersonalities.
TriviaOn August 4, 1886, national hero Jose Rizaldropped at Molo on his way back to Manila fromexile at Dapitan in Mindanao. He went to see hisfriend, Raymundo Melliza who showed him thechurch.In his diary, Rizal wrote, "We went to Molo to seethe church painted by a lad who has left the locality.The church is pretty (iglesia bonita) outside withpaintings inside mostly copies of biblical scenes byGusty Dore."
