In addition to institutional funding and commissioned research, the Department of Neurological Sciences also conducts research funded by private bodies, foundations and individual donations. In particular, the Department received more than a million Euro in the five-year period 1999-2004 from the Consortium for the management of the Clinic of Mental and Nervous Diseases to set up new University Researcher posts, award research grants and purchase equipment and scientific materials. The Department subsequently established ongoing links with the Gino Galletti Foundation, a private foundation recognized by the Department of Health and devoted to the study of dementia and neurodegenerative diseases. From 1999 to date, the Foundation has funded posts for new Researchers and research grants and the purchase of major equipment for genetic and

During the same period, 300.000 Euro of Departmental research was also funded by organizations and private individuals, including a donation of 155.000 Euro by the Pezzoli family and a bequest of 50.000 Euro left by Ms. Diana Pecori.
