Designed to offer an organized mechanism for storing, managing and retrieving information Libraries are databases Storage and retrieval systems have developed and evolved as libraries have early librarians defined standardized filing and retrieval protocols libraries have an indexing system (card catalog) libraries have pointers (a classification system, like the Dewey decimal system)
