Genre ResearchI have already looked into print based magazines which have given me theinspiration to do Alternative Rock as magazines such as NME, Kerrang! and Qhas the layout of the magazine which I wish to produce. By textually analysingthese magazines I have already looked into my targeted genre and I know feelcomfortable in what I am trying to achieve. With my weekly subscription to Qmagazine, I think my chosen genre will help me to clarify my work as I knowwhat I am talking about and I’m actually part of the audience in which this genreis providing. Additionally, with most of the music on my IPod being Kasabian,Arcade Fire, The Killers and The Streets my playlist sets me up for success.

How it came aroundThe use of the term alternative to describe rock music originated around themid-1980s; at the time, the common music industry terms for cutting-edgemusic were new music and post modern, respectively indicating freshness anda tendency to decontextualized sounds of the past.The use of alternative gained further exposure due to the success ofLollapalooza, for which festival founder and Janes Addiction frontman PerryFarrell coined the term Alternative Nation.In the late 1990s, the definition again became more specific. In 1997, NeilStrauss of The New York Times defined alternative rock as "hard-edged rockdistinguished by brittle, 70s-inspired guitar riffing and singers agonizing overtheir problems until they take on epic proportions".
  • 6. CommercialisedThroughout the 1980s, alternative rock was mainly an undergroundphenomenon. An occasional song would come as a hit from bands such as the‘Rolling Stones’. Alternative rock in the 1980’s were relegated to independentrecord labels. This type of genre can be known as Indie rock or alternativemusic.Prior to this ‘Alternative Rock’ hybrid genre was recognised, it was split up intomany different sub-genres such as grunge, Britpop, gothic rock, indie pop, indierock and heavy metal.These can all be classed under the title of rock, giving the genre lots ofalternative styles of music to fit different moods.
