  • When considering plastic surgery, there is no substitute for an ASPS Member Surgeon. Member Surgeons: Are certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery® or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada®. Operate only in accredited medical facilities. Adhere to a strict code of ethics. Fulfill continuing medical education requirements, including standards and innovations in patient safety.
  • If you don’t know anyone who has been a patient of the surgeon, have the surgeon’s patient coordinator put you in contact with at least 2 former patients. Ask friends and acquaintances – word travels wide and far. Speaking with others who have had the same surgery you are considering is a fantastic way to become more informed. The internet … use wisely.Subjective impression is meaningless when selecting a surgeon. Craft should trump your desire to like them; in fact, it's OK to hate your surgeon. You simply need him to cut and sew very intelligently. So always select the surgeon who has already done the most iterations of whatever procedure you need. Stated in Zagat-ian terms: Which restaurant do you want to go to—the one with the line or the one that sits empty?
  • Good enough is not enoughDifference is in the details… Less complications More consistent results The patient experience – the goal is to have you feel perfectly at ease.
  • NYC vs Albany NYDoes more expensive always = better? It cost more to run a practice in a big city than it does in a little city. Rent, people/employees. Basic market forces at work. You pay the difference.Unlike most other forms of surgery, cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance.  Patients must pay out of pocket.  Physicians who perform cosmetic surgery know their patients are price sensitive.  Thus, patients can typically (a) find a package price in advance covering all services and facilities, (b) compare prices prior to surgery and (c) pay a price that is lower in real terms than the price charged 10 years ago for comparable procedures, despite huge increases in demand and considerable innovation.“Competition and innovation have led to lower-cost cosmetic procedures.”
  • Consistent NaturalOptimal
  • In plastic surgery, there are often several ways to approach an aesthetic problem, but usually one way is better than the rest – your surgeon needs to know which one that is.
  • Salesman vs Engineer Odds favor the engineerIf it sounds too good to be true it usually is Too busy to make you feel like you’re his only patient.Patients can call me anytime (especially after surgery). Our phone system forwards to my cell phone. Any question you may have is a question he should be happy to answerWhat’s he like after the check has been cashed? This goes back to the importance of getting references. If there’s a problem, will he fix it (at no cost to you).

    Rickie Fowler
The “next” generation. Lot’s of talent but still very erratic and prone to errors.
    Phil Mickelson
The “old guard”. Clutch under pressure. His results over the past 19 years as a pro do most of the talking.

Get them from other patients & doctors
Do not trust only your instincts if a scalpel is involved
  • Philosophy
    www.DeLucaPlasticSurgery.com
How do they define what a successful experience/outcome for you will be?
“May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.”
    - Hippocrates (460–370 BC)
The importance of first-class pre-procedure & post-surgery care can not be understated.
  • Cost
    www.DeLucaPlasticSurgery.com
When choosing a cosmetic surgeon, does more expensive always = better?
Why do plastic surgeons in NYC cost so much more? Are they that much better?
  • Training, Vision, Talent & Technique
Surgeons that have high levels of the above traits are surgeons who:
    Minimize scaring
    Minimize downtime, speed up recovery
    Minimize post-operation complications (key)
Deliver consistent & reproducible results (i.e. what you see in the before and after photos is what you can reasonably expect to get)

  • Results. Results. Results.
    www.DeLucaPlasticSurgery.com
    Do they consistentlyproduce great work?
Are their results natural and attractive?
How many “average or just-ok” movies has Steven Spielberg directed? Not many.

  • A Great Plastic Surgeon Gets it Right the 1st Time
In plastic surgery, there are often several ways to address a cosmetic issue, but in most cases, one way is superior to all the rest –
    www.DeLucaPlasticSurgery.com
It’s your Surgeon’s job to know what the best option is.
    “His surgeon choose poorly…”
    - Temple Knight, Indian Jones
  • Shortcuts, Gimmicks & Tricks
    www.DeLucaPlasticSurgery.com
  • Shortcuts: Non-Invasive ≠ Long Lasting
Examples: “Weekend facelifts”, “lifestyle facelifts”, etc.
    “Achieve instantaneous perfection” … Really?
Healing takes time – Lasting results require healing
    www.DeLucaPlasticSurgery.com
Especially when it comes to cosmetic surgery
    • The patient has to be committed to the procedure.
    • You need to follow post-op care instructions
    • If you want to have a facelift, there is going to be 2-3 weeks of healing involved. It’s not overnight. Surgeons who give the impression that it isn’t a big deal should not be taken at their word.
  • Gimmicks: The Oprah Effect
Why the ‘latest’ media darling isn’t always the greatest or safest.
“Thread Lift” - aka single stitch “weekend” facelift
Thermage - non-surgical skin tightening using radio frequency
“SmartLipo” - aka ‘laser liposuction’ for large areas
Breast Augmentation through the belly-button (“scar free!”)
“Twilight Surgery” - aka using local anesthesia for major procedures like liposuction
    www.DeLucaPlasticSurgery.com
  • Tricks: Limited Post-Procedure Care
Salesman Surgeon vs Artist-Engineer: You should never feel like you’re being “sold” during any part of the consultation. Good salesmen focus on the sell. Good MDs focus on the result.
What does their personal fee cover in terms of pre & post-op care?? In my practice:
Patients can call me anytime (especially after surgery). Our phone system forwards to my cell phone.
After surgery, I offer patients as many follow-up visits as they need or want at no additional cost.
    www.DeLucaPlasticSurgery.com
Great surgeons provide great care before & afteryour procedure.
If there are any complications after surgery, what is your surgeon’s revision policy? Does he still expect you to pay his personal fee?

Seek out a surgeon more like Captain Sully (or Viper)
  • In Other Words ctd…

    And less like Maverick*
*Of course, many Vipers started out as Mavericks. The difference is, they’ve added wisdom & experience to their arsenal of confidence, instinct, passion and talent.
