  • Welcome and hello everyone. Thank you for joining today. I am Name/TITLE. Today I am here to discuss Dell’s ability to help you cut costs and enhance business agility through Application Modernization.Any organization that has been around for 10 to 20 years or more has seen their IT systems go through many changes around platforms, applications and business workflow to keep up with the business needs.Throughout this constant evolution although some aspects of the IT environment and business workflow move to more modern environments other remnants of past “legacy” IT environments remain.What we want to talk about today is how to confidently and successfully bring these “legacy environments”, platforms, applications and data, into a model that can be leveraged by your organization in your overall strategy .
  • We’ll spend just a minute or two here talking about the importance of modernization and what is driving firms across all verticals to pursue these projects…It really comes down to helping bring IT and business objectives closer together and improving IT to better meet organizational goals. Application modernization projects help you gain control of IT systems and that in turn helps your business lower TCO. In our experience, the legacy environments often carry significantly higher costs than the newer more commoditized environments available. Typically these projects present an opportunity to better understand which parts of your legacy systems are still relevant today. Armed with that information you can move what is still important to a commoditized environment and while doing so take advantage of technologies such as virtualization.Legacy environments don’t often integrate well with other systems because of the proprietary nature of their components and hinder business agility. Moving to a standards based environment can help unlock the full potential of your business processes and help your organization enhance flexibility and respond to market change faster.Legacy systems often were developed in older architectures where developers are less and less available and are not well understood by the organization which makes it difficult to maintain or consider replacing them for fear of breaking something. Application modernization can also enable greater performance and help simplify your IT environment to enable seamless operations and the instant scalability and capacity on demand that today’s 24x7 environment requires.
  • Obviously moving a legacy application that is responsible for a large part of your organization’s revenue base or one that has been in operation for years or even decades is not a simple process. And since your IT team focuses on addressing daily operational requirements, modernization is not typically a skill most firms have in house. It takes an experienced team to deliver these projects and most of the folks our Dell Services’ group have been modernizing a range of workloads for the past twenty years. We now have over 1300 Mainframe Re-hosting sites worldwide, and have helped hundreds of organizations move off the mainframe to lower cost platforms. We have also re-architected over 150 million lines of code across a range of industries. At Dell we can help you achieve your modernization goals without limitations and regardless of what “legacy platforms” exist in your organization and regardless of what application environment exists. There are different paths we help organizations take depending on what your organization defines as success and whether or not you are viewing the process as a one step process or more.We break our main offering into 3 categories: Re-hosting (which includes automated conversion of legacy code), Re-architecture and Portfolio Assessment. Re-hostingis an option that many organizations look at first largely because of the pure cost take out benefit and its contributions to simplifying operations. This involves moving applications from one environment to another in a “like for like” approachwhile retaining your existing business logic, and usually your current end user interfaces and data sources. So this can be a move from a proprietary mainframe or UNIX system to an industry standard system. These types of projects typically last 12 to 18 months and help organizations cut costs between 30 to 70%.Re-architecture is a move that organizations consider typically when they are looking a bigger project and want to go for the business benefit first when their current architecture is holding them back. Maybe they need a new business workflow or new data model or they have a technical end goal where they want pure object oriented code or move to a cloud based architecture andthey need the enhanced agility and nimbleness to be gained from moving their existing legacy code base from something like COBOL, RPG, etc. into a more modern framework such as Java or C#. These projects be a bit longer than re-hosting, typically 18 to 30 months, but the end benefit is significantly different. These moves enhance agility not just by being able to take advantage of the new framework but also by usually dramatically reducing the lines of code one has to manage often between 60 to 80%.So we have talked about these two point solutions first, and these offers and what they address are typically why organizations come and talk to us initially. They have a specific need they need to address such as cost reduction or business agility and we take them down a rationalization path specific to those applications, but often there is a larger modernization initiative or requirement behind that. With our Portfolio Assessment offer we can help you gather information and categorize it to get a full view on what is running in your enterprise and build disposition strategies for your entire portfolio from that. All of these solutions are backed by specialized processes, methodologies and toolingand as you can see Dell has significant experience with delivering these types of projects with hundreds of millions of lines of legacy application code processed, extensive production customer references and success stories validating that these projects can be done on time and in budget if planned and executed properly with the Dell team.
  • It is important to emphasize that Dell’s Application Modernization solution is Comprehensive in natureHighly automated and does not require risky rewrite type scenariosCovers a wide range of legacy platforms such as IBM Mainframe, Tandem, AS/400, Unix, etcCovers a wide range of legacy application languages such as COBOL, PL/I, Assembler, Natural, etcCovers a wide range of proprietary data sources such as VSAM, GDG’s, IMS DB, Adabas, Oracle, Sybase, DB2, etcCovers a wide range of environments such as CICS, IMS, SAP, Peoplesoft, Oracle EBS, etcIt is also important to note here that Dell covers not only the point solutions around migration or re-architecture. We also cover the entire project scope from planning to infrastructure to performance to third party package interfaces, custom code, data, testing, cutover planning and execution and even ongoing maintenance and support for our customers either until their team gets up to speed or for longer periods of time as needed.The ability to get “one throat to choke” ensures that both Dell and our customers are singularly focused on the overall success of the project as a whole. The more partners that get involved the more chance of something being missed and if it is missed having no responsible party.
  • So with the clear benefits of modernization legacy application environments, why are there still legacy systems out there? If you look at the UNIX market, you will see that actually ½ of the workloads that were on those systems have been migrated off to Linux and Windows systems over the past decade. Most of the ‘easier’ Generic network and Web infrastructure workloads already moved or are moving off Unix to Linux and/or Windows – it is the line of business apps and databases that remain.As we talk to customers in the field we commonly hear these Barriers as reasons why they not moved away sooner They don’t know what they have really and are afraid to break something with a moveTheir environment is unique and complex with too many integration pointsA big item – they may have looked into modernization in the past and determined that it was too time consuming to do with internal resources who are already overtaxed and they may lack funding available for new projects.And finally, they can’t afford to disruptionor they believe competitive FUD that their needs around performance, uptime and SLA’s cannot be achieved in x86 platformsSo those are barriers to getting started. During a modernization project challenges can arise as well and your likelihood of success diminishes if these are not addressed up front. If the goals of the project are not clearly defined or the complete picture is not taken into account upfront you run the risk of scope creep during the project and even risk of cancellation mid-way thru if executive teams don’t see the clear value and end results you are looking to obtain.If the project is viewed as a one off endeavor and you don’t have buy in from the top levels of the organization you may run into resistance throughout the organization during the project that impedes your forward progress as well.Dell has successfully transitioned hundreds of customers from proprietary legacy platforms to distributed architectures running in production around the world. These organizations had the same fears, apprehensions and challenges as stated above and more. They all thought they were unique, too complex, challenged the performance and SLA issues and virtually all had budget constraints. In the end they were all successful in eliminating costly and archaic legacy platforms within a predictable time and cost scope and are better for it.

  • To address the barrier of lack of insight and to make sure you truly are taking the complete picture into account we start with a Portfolio Assessment with many of our clients. Dell Portfolio Assessment allows us to apply highly automated tools and specific methodologies to provide a 360 degree view of the application and data environment used in your organization And this is done in a highly automated process so you don’t start before you plan. An assessment analyzes code, data and also business use cases. This information is captured and stored in a powerful repository allowing us to analyze and query the information in an infinite model of possibilities depending upon needs.Using all of this information Dell will propose aDisposition Strategy for each Asset component to identify candidates for re-hosting, re-architecture, replacement or in some cases “do nothing”The end result is the generation of a Modernization Roadmap for an organization laying out a complete modernization plan or any number of compartmentalized components of such a plan. All of our Portfolio Assessments are tailored to the needs of the customer and fit for purpose to provide maximum benefit.
  • Gather and categorize, esp. helpful in organizations with organizations who have undergone numerous mergers and acquisitions.Do dependency checking in an automated way so when you are trying to group apps in a way to do a phased modernization approach you are not guessing.The importance of maintaining all of your information in a central repository cannot be understated -With Dell Repository we track information such as An inventory of assets in the environment (applications, data, etc)An inventory of business processes associated with the assetsData Dictionary and Data Model for the assetsRelationships between applications and data storesThis repository is not static. If you are doing a phased approach or multiple migrations, all changes are captured and updated right in the software
  • There are all kinds of choices you can consider as you go thru this process and perform a portfolio assessment. With Dell you are not just limited to looking at one pillar or solution area, you can maximize the use of the information you gather and decide to do one or multiple solutions.You can benefit from simply consolidating and/or re-hosting your existing mainframe and UNIX systems over to open, industry standard platforms. In the case of many packaged applications, this involves and upgrade or migration process. For custom, home grown application code we may look to bring in our mainframe re-hosting technology to address specialized workloads such as CICS and IMS. These moves can also help you eliminate a high cost software vendor.If you are looking to enhance functionality during modernization, you might be taking your custom code and re-architecting it or even replacing it with a package if your organization has made the determination that an ERP system will be addressing these types of functionality needs. Dell can help with all of this and we can even help in areas such as Business Process Outsourcing. So if you decide after going thru this process that it doesn’t make sense to run this business anymore, you can even decide to pursue that option.Often it make sense to approach these solutions in phases as well. You may look at re-hosting to get your cost down, and then re-architect. Or you may have Dell take over the management of certain applications and then have us modernization the applications in a subsequent project phase.
  • What we are doing with many organizations who have tens to hundreds of applications is putting all of our app mod capabilities together and engaging in a migration factory model approach. Here we put a team of specialists in place at your site, and they work with your experts to get a comprehensive view of your application portfolio and then deliver various modernization projects. This view is multi-faceted, taking business, applications, operations and financial areas into account.From this information, our team works with you to create various Application Modernization Packages that get executed – the packages can be based on technology profile, cost to operate, line of business, business impact, etc. As projects are implemented updated information is fed back into the repository.We agree on a monthly billing model that works best for your organization – example options may be:Fixed Monthly billing each month across term of engagementFixed Billing directionally mapping to the initial resource allocation described in this modelTrack time and bill according to usage each monthAs your projects evolve we will mutually determine what the best use of existing Dell resources are or what replacement resources are needed to best meet our objectives so the team member roles in the factory can vary depending on the current priorities of your business, to included such resources as:Project Manager, Project Coordinator , Lead Technical Architect, DB Architect – Lead, Senior/Junior DBAs, System Admin, Testing etc.We will reconcile each month with a dashboard to synch up on, What we have billed so far, What is remaining from the committed amountThe advantage of this approach is that throughout the engagement you have a big picture view of your environment and you can help transform your IT portfolio w/out stretching existing staff, ramping up temporarily internal resources.   • So we have spent a lot of time focused on the applications part of modernization, but these projects can touch all areas of your data center, and that is why it is very important that an end-to-end approach be used that encompasses the infrastructure, software and services too.Unlike other vendors, our solutions are built on a foundation of our own commercial IP.   • Now we are going to talk about just a few customer we have helped …The first example is Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC). ARC processes and reconciles all ticket purchases for 190 airlines The pace of change in the travel industry is accelerating. Airlines and other travel providers are updating business models and billing practices with greater frequency to remain competitive and profitable. ARC’s legacy mainframe systems were holding the organization back from being able to rapidly act and make changes so they had embarked on a plan to move these applications to a modern SOA framework.ARC engaged Dell Services to assess their modernization plans. During a five-week process, Dell solution experts concluded that ARC had a well-defined enterprise architecture process. However, they also identified potential implementation risks, including a lack of detailed information on “current state” understanding of legacy application business rules and interdependencies. Dell consultants recommended that ARC use automated discovery processes to ensure that comprehensive information was captured to reverse-engineer current business rules to the new SOA framework. Following this recommendation, ARC engaged Dell Services for a Portfolio Assessment to reduce the time and effort needed to identify application interdependencies. They used Dell Analyzer technology to identify and catalog the relationships between data sets, application code, use cases and business processes. This information was made available to project members via Dell Repository, a collaborative, web-based portal.Dell’s approach saved the ARC technical team approximately four months of effort. By reviewing and optimizing ARC’s overall application modernization strategy, Dell is helping ARC minimize risk and ensure a smooth transition of their critical legacy applications to a flexible, agile SOA framework.
  • Here is an example Re-architecture customer. In this case, P2 Energy, an oil and gas specialized software and data solutions leader wanted to modernize its functionally-rich but technology-outdated application to better meet market requirements and enable market-share growthSo they modernized a key application from a mixed report program generator (RPG)/Progress technology environment to Java using Dell Application Re-architecture technology.This migration provided them numerous benefits but the biggest were that it simplified maintenance by reducing lines of code 80 percent while still conserved 20-year investment in market-leading intellectual property. The project also helped:• Introduced deferred enhancements and streamlined the number of use cases• Modernized user interfaces and reporting• Prepared the business to position itself more competitively in the market
  • Dell Services also recently completed of an application modernization project with Singapore Exchange (SGX). The legacy migration project helped SGX double the speed of a critical application, significantly lower annual operating costs and better position its IT systems to align with future business initiatives.With a market capitalization of more than US$5 billion, SGX is among the world's largest exchanges and is Asia’s second-largest listed exchange. The exchange already offers the region's longest trading hours and was looking to streamline IT operations and lower cost-per-transaction rates, while better preparing to address future market growth.SGX chose Dell to provide end-to-end application modernization services and mainframe re-hosting technology as part of a multi-million USD modernization project. Dell helped migrate SGX's entire mainframe complex, including key applications like clearing and settlement, third-party tools and utilities, and server and storage resources to a flexible open systems environment with minimum customer impact. Before selecting Dell’s mainframe re-hosting solution, SGX evaluated three options: rewriting its mainframe applications; upgrading its mainframe; and re-hosting its applications to a modern, open platform. The exchange opted to re-host its application environment. Mainframe re-hosting offered the most cost-effective solution and involved less risk than rewriting.In addition to Dell Mainframe Re-hosting software, Dell Enterprise COBOL was leveraged in the project to migrate SGX's IBM CICS applications, batch JCL code, COBOL programs, and VSAM data intact. This approach avoided costly code changes and enable SGX clients to continue accessing its systems without reconfiguration.This 15-month project enabled SGX to implement an agile, industry-standard platform as part of its endeavor to future proof its IT systems. The exchange has now moved to “phase two” of the project, which will deliver the ability more easily and rapidly facilitate the introduction of new SGX products.
  • I hope that during this presentation you have gained a clear understanding that Dell has a very credible and strong offering around Application Modernization. This is a broad offering that is backed by significant experience and successful customer references.Our projects are delivered in budget and on time and our customers can attest to the fact that they realize the benefits they expected to achieve during the project.Before I close I want to leave you with a few keys to be successful in projects like Application ModernizationYou must have a clear picture of what you want to accomplish and commit to the project and investment up front. You must ensure that you look at the entire scope of the project and validate your assumptions with an expert. The most costly mistake customers often make is missing or excluding a major item in the project.You must build a detailed implementation plan that includes all aspects of the project including applications, data, infrastructure, operations, third party utilities, etc. The more comprehensive and integrated the plan is the better chance you will have of being able to establish reliability in your estimates of time and scope.You need to take an end-to-end approach with these projects. Not just focused on getting the plan in place to address the migration of the applications and data, but also the organizational readiness required to continue operations on the new target platform.It is important to have the right project governance model established at all levels of the organization including regular meetings with not only the project staff but monthly meetings, for example with executives from all parties involved to ensure that issues are resolved quickly and expeditiously. One aspect of projects that is often overlooked is the time it takes for organizations to get to the root of a problem and implement a solution without taking weeks to do so. These projects are long enough that too many of these little delays add up. Having decision makers bought in from all sides who can make decisions on a regular basis is very helpful.Finally, it is very imperative that you select an experienced partner who can address the implementation from end to end. These projects are not typical application development projects or things that customers typically do. Therefore they require specialized skills, methodologies and tools to ensure success. By selecting the right partner you can be assured that the commitments made by and to all parties is accurate and the potential for confusion and finger pointing is minimized.
