  • The market for converged solutions has formed over the past few years and offers customers a spectrum of choices.However there are limitations…First, some competitive solutions are inflexible & incompleteProprietary architectures offered by competitors like Cisco lock customers into an architecture that may be difficult to disaggregate over time; they are built to operate in a single way and may not support all customer needs or integrate with existing management offerings in a clear or simple manner. This architecture is meant to protect lucrative networking revenue streams. Incomplete - lack key elements such as integrated storage or support for physical infrastructures (non-virtual, which still exist in many customer environments).Next there are offerings that are either complex and/or expensive.Complex in that they are hard to implement, integrate, and use, or that require multiple tools that don’t integrate to address key customer requirements.   • So, right off the bat I want to start our conversation around convergence with the solution we launched yesterday, Dell’s Active System that we’ll go into much more detail later in the presentation. First and foremost, we at Dell define convergence as a process, we don’t believe there is one singular way to approach every customer’s IT requirements, and that converged infrastructure solutions should meet the customer’s own definition of what converged infrastructure, or convergence if you will, means to them. And that is that solutions are built to deliver results to respond more rapidly, improve efficiency and quality of IT services, and that it can scale with a customer without scaling cost, particularly operational cost, of IT serivces.
  • Talk a little about the cloud market in general, we thinks there’s so much hype out there and it creates some confusion, and get into some real strategies as to how people are leveraging cloud infrastructure and the various ways we are seeing that happen in the marketplace, following that we will go into a live demonstration and take a look at the infrastructure platform we’ve put together. Following the demonstration we’ll move into a QandA session so depending on what that looks like we’ll hopefully have you fed and out early
  • As we move forward there are 3 things we focus on, today you’ll hear about iland cloud services which is the platform we’ve created with VMware that enables delivery of public, private and hybrid cloud environments. We’ve done quite a bit as well with disaster recovery and have a strong history there and then we’ll talk a bit about testing and development as well.

  • Now that we’ve talked a bit about Thunderbolt 800, let’s look under the hood at the underlying architecture. Modular FoundationThunderbolt 800 starts with a modular foundation. This foundation starts with PowerEdge blade servers, available in 1/4, ½ , and full height blades. This bladed infrastructure minimizes the possibility of incorrect cabling of a server to other components, simplifying up front integration, and delivering enhanced system quality downstream. Dell blade infrastructure also provide industry leading power & cooling efficiency, minimizing ongoing operating expenses. Dell is also changing server networking with the PowerEdge M I/O Aggregator, which is designed to simplify blade chassis networking by pushing advanced networking features to the top of rack switch. It is purpose built for a server administrator with simple deployment and management tools. It is capable of handling a converged SAN/LAN fabric, and can facilitate east/west chassis traffic with 10GbE throughput. In addition to the bladed infrastructure and simple IOM, Dell promotes a converged SAN/LAN fabric as a to improve overall system efficiency. Converged fabric is an ideal in the Thunderbolt framework, meaning we also support separate fabrics for those customers requiring this option.Converged ManagementOrchestrating this underlying foundation is Dell’s Converged Management tool, Skyhawk. Key to Thunderbolt, Skyhawk is an intelligent and intuitive converged infrastructure manager. DSM leverages templates to automate infrastructure set-up, which greatly simplifies and speeds up the process, and also greatly reduces errors associated with manual set-up. The result is better infrastructure quality with fewer configuration errors that can be costly.End to End Experience Dell takes our modular infrastructure and converged management (Intellectual Property) and packages it in a way that provides an end to end experience for customers. This might mean supplying pre-validated components out of the Dell Thunderbolt Solution Matrix, providing guidance via our reference architectures, or delivering a pre-integrated offering that is optimized, pre-built, and deployed onsite with turnkey services. Each of these models is provided by a single vendor, enabling a single point of accountability.
  • The Active System is Intuitive via the Active System Manager. This tool enables end-to-end management via the automated discovery and inventory of infrastructure, and automation of provisioning and reclamation via template based provisioning tools. Dell developed an industry first by developing embedded blade server management, 2 generations of our m1000e chassis ago, and now is enabled by Active System manager to provide automated lifecycle management of infrastructure.The Active System Manager has intuitive, guided user workflows and multi-level views of topology to enable consistency of process and collaboration, and you don’t need a different tool for networking than you do for compute or storage because Dell owns the IP from end-to-end.

  • A long time customer of Dell, this customer operates a network of churches in North America and sought to expand their virtual infrastructure.Similar to many of our other customers, IT is extremely important to their business however, it is not their core strength. While they have successfully virtualized a large percentage of their infrastructure it has been a struggle – with projects taking too long and placing their few qualified IT resources under growing pressure. Upon hearing of vStart, they approached us and were one of the very first customers to adopt the new Dell offering. They liked the fact that it was delivered pre-built and eliminated the need for their staff to go through the standard phases such as design, test, configuration and integration. They also valued the fact that this brought them about100 VMs right away and allows them to bring on additional capacity as needed. The were very impressed with the whole delivery and deployment process and believe that vStart will be an important tool as they work on their plans to become a software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider .
