  • “By 2015, one-third of all servers will ship as managed resources integrated in a converged infrastructure, enabling providers to extract integration premiums from traditional component line-item pricing, thus creating a more complex procurement process.”Is the Concept of the 'Server' Obsolete, or in Need of Redefining?G00231410, Published: 29 March 2012
  • Challenge: Roadblocks to infrastructure agility & efficiencyIT infrastructure operations have always crossed domain boundaries … but virtualization has amplified these interactions.Current tools do not comprehend the changing operational roles in ITServer admins have evolved into virtualization admins but they have to do more with lessExpensive & highly qualified administrators doing mundane tasks Domain administrators are being kept away from higher value and more strategic activitiesReduced responsiveness due to existing manual processesTime is wasted waiting on resources and people due to cross-domain dependenciesSolution: Convergence provides automation to drive efficiency & agilityConvergence collapses and automates critical administrative tasks to speed up routine tasks and free up experts for higher order needs.Replace domain silos policy-based automation. Reduce operational costs for virtual infrastructure and underlying hardware Refocus domain admins on higher-value tasks. Speed workload deployments and improve accuracy while minimizing routine tasksSupport existing management processes. Augment existing tooling to gain great efficiency and agility without rip-and-replace
  • Dell believes that convergence will be pervasive in the data center and beyond as a way to drive agility, efficiency and quality.  Four key attributes of applying converged infrastructure solutions are:Simplify operations and amplify IT productivity by unifying and automating management without compromising domain-level control across physical & virtual infrastructureProvide a complete & integrated infrastructure solution without tradeoffs by adopting  holistic infrastructure innovations that integrate into your existing data center architecturesImprove reliability with better infrastructure & insights to ensure performance, availability & quality with pre-engineered design & more complete infrastructure visibilityMaximize value with pre-integrated solutions, or take a more tailored, DIY approach by leveraging flexible infrastructure delivery models that align to your specific need
  • Rapidly Respond: to dynamic business demands with template based infrastructure provisioning & modular infrastructureMaximize Efficiency: with automated management of pre-validated infrastructure platforms supported by a single vendorImprove IT Service Quality: with repeatable deployment, integration, and management models

  • This is not Dell’s first foray into converged infrastructure, having helped customers build CI solutions for quite some time. In addition to bringing turnkey pre-integrated solutions to market a few years ago in the form of vStart, Dell has also been on a tear lately adding differentiated IP to the portfolio including EqualLogic, Compellent, Force10, and other coming soon.Over three billion in acquired IP alone, not including the subsequent additional investments in the acquisitions and Dell’s organic R&D investments.EqualLogic – Jan 2008 M1000e – March 2008The M1000e, home to the World’s most power efficient blade servers for the past three generations.Ad Copy#: G12001504Basis – The PowerEdge M600 (10th Generation), The PowerEdge M610 (11th Generation) and The PowerEdge M620 (12th) Generation, all held the highest SPEC_power scores for their given life cycles..11G embedded systems – 2009Spectre – Dec 2010Compellent – Feb 2011vStart 100 – April 2011Force 10 – Aug 2011vStart 50 – Sept 11vStart 200 vStart Private Cloud/SharePoint – Jan 201212G embedded management and M420 – Feb 2012Colosssus/MXL/vStart 1000 – June 2012vStart for VDI – Aug 2012DS – Oct 2012

Basis – Cisco claims support for up to 40 chassis (max 320 servers at 8 servers per chassis for B200 M3). Active System Manager will support 20 chassis (max 640 servers at 32 servers per chassis with M420).Remove bottlenecks and oversubscription from the blade architecture with up to 6x more bandwidth leaving a Dell chassis than a Cisco chassis. Basis – Cisco chassis has eight 10 gigabit ports per Fabric Extender, with two fabric extenders per chassis, for a total of 16 ports, or 160 Gbps. The Dell chassis has sixteen 10 gigabit ports per PowerEdge M I/O Aggregator, with up to 6 IOAs per chassis, for a total of 96 ports, or 960 Gbps. 960 is six times 160.Get more use out of your data center space, with up to 2.3x more compute nodes per rack from Dell than Cisco, and up to 2x more than HP.  Basis – A rack is 42 rack units (42U). Each Dell chassis is 10U, so 4 chassis fit in a rack. Each chassis holds up to 32 M420 blades. Total blades per rack is 128. Each Cisco chassis is 6U, so 7 chassis fit in a rack. Each chassis holds up to 8 B200 M3 blades. Total blades per rack is 56. 128 is 2.3 times more than 56. Each HP chassis is 10U, so 4 chassis fit in a rack. Each chassis holds 16 BL460c Gen8 blades. Total blades per rack is 64. 128 is 2 time more than 64. >>>>>>>>>ad# G12003462Dell vStart can deliver rapid time to value, with included initial deployment services. A vStart can be up and running in approximately 2-3 days . Basis: Most organizations spend approximately 3 months in building out their infrastructure (Ad# 12001644 )Server updates in a vStart can get done up to 5x faster  than in a comparable HP configuration Basis: Increase IT administrator productivity by 80% utilizing OpenManage Essentials to update two racks of Dell PowerEdge multi-generation servers in two minutes as compared to ten minutes to update one rack of HP Gen8 servers. AD# G12000827  Using Dell OpenManage Essentials, two racks of multi-generation Dell PowerEdge servers were updated in two minutes. The HP Gen8 Announcement on February 13, 2012 included a claim stating that: “HP ProLiant Gen8 triples administrator productivity by eliminating most manual operations such as server updates, which typically take five hours of administrator time per rack of servers. The industry-first HP Smart Update feature can perform the same update in 10 minutes or less.”(2) 2) HP internal time and motion study HP ProLiant Gen8 380 vs. Dell R710http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2012/120213c.html  CAUTION: GEOGRAPHIC LIMITATIONS ON COMPARATIVE ADVERTISING: Comparative claims are not allowed in all countries.  Please see below to learn which countries ban Dell vs. Named Competitor claims, and which countries will allow the claims only if based upon independent third party testing.  You may also contact Legal Counsel in the Region where the claim will be made for additional guidance.Do not make the claims in: Argentina, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Morocco, Turkey, Venezuela, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand,3rd party testing required (Do not make claims) in: Chile, Egypt, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine Testing is based on what the OpenManage team has completed as a result of the HP Gen8 announcement on Feb 13, 2012
  • Let’s level set on what our viewpoint on convergence is. Convergence is a journey that encompasses many aspects to drive better operational efficiency and allow customers to focus on delivering to their end users. Customers don’t have the luxury or the ability to forklift everything or boil the ocean and there is no silver bullet. They need to take a logical phased approach and do the things that will build upon each other and get their IT operations to an Efficient and Agile State. As we discussed at the opening, Convergence is not just about the infrastructure, but about the operations of the data center as a whole. Just simplifying cabling and deployment won’t give the long term benefits IT needs to be agile. Customers have to look beyond the infrastructure to Operations, Applications and Service Management. With Operations, we need to reduce the number of consoles we use and collapse the tasks of multiple administrators. This will reduce operational costs and increase scale. Optimizing the applications is also a key driver of efficiency. Is the application running on the right platform (Unix to x86), is it optimized to deliver the best end user experience? Should the application be hosted externally based on the internal costs to support it? Last is Service Management – How can IT deliver the best service possible to it’s end users at the speed they desire. End Users can no longer wait months to get a new service up and running, they need it quickly. IT needs to look at what makes sense to do themselves and what should be done elsewhere. For the services being delivered internally, they need private cloud functionality.Dell is focusing on how we deliver this across the IT Continuum, while competitors are focused on specific parts.
