  • By now everyone in IT is probably aware of the Windows XP end of life on April 8th 2014. This end of support is going to have a huge impact on organizations with part of their workforce on XP. Surprisingly our research has shown us that nearly 38% of PC’s are still on XP. So what is the impact of this? Well after April there will be no more patches or bug fixes from Microsoft. Support of these machines is going to get costly. Support from Microsoft will be $250 per PC per year and that’s just to start with. Everyone anticipates that cost will only escalate from that point. What is the treat of not migrating? Rik Ferguson, the global VP of security researh at Trend Micro states that “It’s absolute gold dust to an attacker because they’ll know that any vulnerabilities will be zero-days for you” This means that the answer is to migrate existing hardware to a modern operating system, either Windows 7 or Windows 8, whichever is a better fit for your business or deploy new machines. Depending on the size of your organization it may be preferable for you to install something like our Changebase or KACE software solutions, or partner with our services to help you accelerate over that finish line in time. Our experts can help you jump start a new migration or fast forward one already in progress. We deploy millions of enterprise-class Windows 7 and Windows 8systems each year in over 150 countries, and we can partner with you to help ensure a smooth, cost-effective transition.
  • Migration of your workforce to a modern Windows operating system is complex and can strain IT resources. What we’re hearing from our customers is that they have a plan in place to migrate from Windows XP and the are aware of the deadline but they have ran into delays or roadblocks along the way. These roadblocks are typically related to:Limitations on staffGlobal availabilty of resourcesUnderstanding the current application inventory and stalls in mitigating those applicationsMaybe they have automation software but it was never fully implemented or they just don’t have the right disc image for deployment. In a lot of cases they simply can’t develop the right methodology to migrate without disturbing the workforce significantly.Often we hear that they are hesitant because they do not have the resources to train the workforce on the new OS and are expecting a real pushback from employees on the change.
  • At Dell we believe that the secret of an efficient Windows migration is application, hardware, and deployment readiness. Our experts can help your team jump start a new migration or fast forward one already in progress. We deploy millions of enterprise-class Windows 7 and Windows 8 systems each year in over 150 countries, and we can partner with you to ensure a smooth transition with lower overall costs.
  • As Microsoft’s #1 Windows 7 deployment partner, Dell has developed unique tools and proven practices to ensure readiness and a cost effective workforce migration. If yours is like most organizations you may have an average of 80 applications per 1000 employees, with 75% of those applications unknown, unmanaged and rarely used. Dell we believe that the completeness of your applications testing will determine your migration success. Dell can help your team avoid roadblocks through standardized tools and processes to analyze your application inventory, develop a strategy and execute your migration. Prepare for Windows 7 or Windows 8 by assessing application, hardware and deployment readiness . Where are you in the journey?Automate by building an image for automated deployment including the base OS and needed applicationsImplement: based on a personalized plan, Createmigration design, images and repackage apps.Migrate and manage version changes moving forward
  • Develop a plan to ensure the outcomes for a successful migrationMany people only think of Managed Deployment Services (MDS) when there are large numbers of PCs to be deployed. However, our capabilities range far beyond that. MDS can handle OS-only upgrades where there is no new PC, Office upgrades, thin clients, Lync phones and peripherals. Managed Deployment is a combination of tools, Project Management and technicians that can handle any mass migration in the end user computing space.Client Deployment Manager (CDM) is one key differentiator for Dell’s MDS services. CDM is a cloud-based project management tool optimized for large end user migrations. CDM handles user surveys, site surveys, hardware readiness tracking, technician assignments, change management communications and reporting. This tool allows our project managers to effectively manage thousands of individual deployments. Dell Optimized Deployment leverages a number of exclusive patented technologies that Dell created as well as tools from Microsoft. Microsoft tools include User State Migration Tool (USMT), Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) and SCCM. Dell tools include KACE as well as numerous automation modules that we created to automate specific deployment activities.
  • Dell Education Services: Our training offerings cover Microsoft technical and end-user products, PowerEdge servers and blade systems, Compellent, EqualLogic and SAN storage training, Dell Force10 Networks, Virtualization training, Dell Management Console, Desktop and Laptop maintenance, and more.Dell, thanks to its customer facing training service organization, Dell Education Services, has been named one of the 2013 Top 20 IT Training Companies by TrainingIndustry.com. This is the 5th year in a row, Dell has accomplished this.
  • Application Readiness: Most organizations have an average of 80 applications per 1000 employees, with 75% of those applications unknown, unmanaged and rarely used. Dell we believe that the completeness of your applications testing will determine your migration success. Dell can help your team avoid roadblocks through standardized tools and processes to analyze your application inventory, develop a strategy and execute your migration.  Application Inventory and rationalizationDell can help your team catalog every executable on each PC in your organization. Our unique tools can automatically identify and filter more than 115 million executable applications, providing their title, publisher, version and functional category. Once an inventory is established our experts can apply business rules to drive recommendations on which applications to keep or retire. Automated tools from Dell can quickly deliver a wealth of information about application locations, license costs, versions and duplicate functionality, enabling companies to cut the costs of redundant or unnecessary software. Retiring a single application can save up to $3,000 in annual management costs.  Automation readinessWith an accurate inventory of necessary applications, Dell can help you ready your applications through packaging specific to your organization’s needs. Packaging prepares applications for automated installation and de-installation with management tools such as KACE, SCCM or Altiris. Dell can enhance these tools with Dell Optimized Deployment technology for mass deployments and OS migrations. Dell experts will be with you at every step of the way testing Windows 7 or Windows 8 compatibility using technologies like Dell ChangeBASE to automate as much of the process as possible. Application compatibility testing will streamline the complex process of sorting the applications currently in use, by those that can be migrated and those that will need to be virtualized, replaced or retired. Hardware readinessMigrations do not need to be complicated. Following the same best practices as Dells Windows Migration Services, Dell Optimized and Managed Deployment Services can support your team with end-to-end services to reduce costs, ease downtime and relieve the strain on your IT staff.
  • Benefits of software solutionsDell has a number of software solutions from KACE and ChangeBASE that make it easier to complete your migration project on time and under budget and continue to support your PCs post-migration.With the automation provided by Dell software solutions from KACE and ChangeBASE, you canCut migration timeReduce costsSimplify and automate a full range of migration and post-migration tasks:Inventory and rationalization – to determine what you have and what will be migratedApplication assessment and repackaging – to make sure your critical apps will run as intended in the new Windows environmentDeployment – of your new Windows image and migration of user dataSupport – post migration support of your PCs to ensure they are secure and services to highest standardsTools to meet your need at each stepDell has the right tools for each of the key steps in the migration process:Planning: First step is to determine what you have any what you will migrate.
