  • IDC says that on average about 25% the cost of an HPC system is dedicated to storage. Dell’s customers also tell us that HCP storage accounts for about 90% of their problems and administration time.But you can’t solve or even begin to address the HPC storage problems until you realize that HPC storage is about solutions. It’s not about just hardware, or just file systems, or just the clients, but it is about all aspects of the storage: Storage hardwareClient hardwareNetworkingManagement and monitoring toolsFile systemsDocumentationBest practicesSize and performance guidelinesServicesSupportAll of these aspects of HPC storage must be addressed to create good solutions to HPC problems.One of the most popular topics in HPC storage is file systems. According to a recent IDC study on HPC Storage, 25 customers who were polled said that they used 13 different file systems. This indicates that not one, two, or three file systems satisfies the HPC Storage market.Other aspects of HPC storage such as the storage hardware, client, network, etc. only increase the number of possible solution paths for HPC storage.To help determine which set of technologies should be considered in your HPC Storage solution, you should understand that HPC Storage is driven just like the compute side of HPC – by the applications. Very, very few customers truly understand the IO characteristics of their applications. By the way, Dell can help with this by using an IO pattern tool that works with Linux using strace. This tool is open-source but since it’s under development it is recommended that Dell actually run it for you.Another very important consideration around HPC storage is that some recent studies have shown that data is rarely touched after about 2-4 weeks after it is created. However, other influencers such as NSF (National Science Foundation) and NIH (National Institute of Health) are requiring grantees to keep data for up to 20-30 years. So why keep that data on really high-performance storage solutions that don’t have data protection for long-term storage and that is probably expensive. Why not move it to a lower-cost tier?But overall, the biggest challenges facing the HPC community are getting the required performance, reliability, and capacity at a desirable cost in a solution.

  • Business Requirement Compute nodes in an HPC environment almost always require a common file system for applications and tools. A Network File System (NFS) provides a simple, robust solution for such a common file system. Storage solutions based on the NFS protocol are widely used for HPC clusters because NFS is simple, time-tested, easy to use and install, has known failure modes and is a standard package in virtually every Linux distribution. These characteristics make NFS an attractive online storage solution for many HPC installations. When is NFS needed?Virtually all clusters, regardless of size, need a shared file systemAt the very minimum for /home and applicationsFor small to medium systems NFS can also serve as primary file system for jobsNo need for high-speed scratch file system for most application profilesEven for large systems, NFS can serve user/home data and applicationsNo need for performance; just reliability and ease of use/managementDepartmental HPC: application code home directories, input data, cluster working space (depends upon application profile)Larger scale HPC: application code, home directories and input data The storage I/O system is one of the most important components that impacts how efficiently the cluster runs.For clusters running applications with lower I/O needs, simplicity, reliability and cost may be the primary design factors as opposed to performance and scalability. The NSS is appropriate for customers who need an industry standard storage solution that is easy to administer, is reliable and has very good performance within certain boundaries.Even in clusters with higher I/O requirements, administrators may prefer secondary storage repository to keep users’ home directories, application storage and longer term storage of the application data. For these needs, a Network File System (NFS) provides a robust solution. NFS is available with virtually all Linux distributions: therefore, it is cost effective and is easy to configure, deploy, and maintain.NFS NFS is an industry standard network file system that is commonly used in Linux environments. The NFS packages are native to most Linux distributions including Red Hat Enterprise Linux. NFS provides an access protocol that easy to setup, configure and manage and that is commonly used in HPC environments. The version of NFS used in the NSS solutions is version 3 and used TCP as the network protocol. NFS provides a great solution when the I/O requirements of the cluster can be met by a single server.
