Augmented reality (AR) is a term for a live direct or an indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements areaugmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality. By contrast, virtual reality replaces the real world with a simulated one.Augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with environmental elements, such as sports scores on TV during a match. With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally manipulable. Artificial information about the environment and its objects can be overlaid on the real world. The term augmented reality is believed to have been coined in 1990 by Thomas Caudell, working at Boeing.Research explores the application of computer-generated imagery in live-video streams as a way to enhance the perception of the real world. AR technology includes head-mounted displays and virtual retinal displays for visualization purposes, and construction of controlled environments containing sensors and actuators.A marker is created and information is virtually added.

Over 100 “layer options” Select Layers Over 100 options from couponing to games to education and artTo promote Louisiana's Voodoo Experience music festival, New Orleans agency Zehnder Communications built a custom augmented reality application for use with Layar. Users could find information about performances, attractions, and services by simply looking through their smartphone's camera. Not sure who's on stage right now? Peer through the Voodoo app to find out, and see who's next with artist profiles and web links. We've covered the potential for mobile technology built around music venues and the application of social media with websites like Superglued.
Other layers let users play games within their environment, browse for clothes in a 360-degree virtual shop, or even view artwork placed digitally into the real world. And the new category of layers created with Layar Vision will let users unlock digital experiences from images and objects in the real world. With Layar Vision, these digital experiences can be launched from visual triggers, like magazines, posters and newspapers. Layar Vision enables the creation of layers and applications that recognize real world objects and display digital experiences on top of them. This new functionality lets layers become truly immersive as seemingly ordinary objects come alive with interactivity. The Layar Browser including Vision is currently in beta, and is only intended for developers.See our introductory Layar Vision video for examples, or click here to learn more about Layar Reality Browser, including ways to contact members of our community of developers and artists.
