It took until...<br />1991 the birth of the worldwide web as we know it <br />April 6thpublicly available<br />C.1994/5 Private Internet Service providers started evolving like Usenet <br />and a new social etiquette or netiquete evolved to combat the first anti-social behaviour of “flaming” <br />1988 the fore-runner to twitter... UNIX based Internet Relay Chat which was created by JarkkoOikarinen. <br />It broke the news of the Soviet Coup attempt during the Gulf War news blackout and # tags denoting trends or things to watch were started. We started interacting…<br />Late 90s message boards & internet forums became popular<br />1996 Instant Messenger was created by four Israeli technologists for personal pcs <br />this was developed further by AOL - Emoticons (expressions), avatars (representations of you) and abbreviations such as A/S/L (age, sex, location) came in to fashion<br />1997 1st Social Networking Site went live – Six Degrees<br />1998 Ecademy launched - still going 13 years later<br />June 1999 Napster went live sharing rave raged until the site was shut down and forced to remove copyrighted material<br /> Twitter: amanda_hill FB: TheSocialMediaCafe<br />

In the beginning…<br />2002 Friendster attracted 115 million followers<br />2004 – 2006 My Space followed creating it’s 100 millionth account on August 9th 2006 but was eclipsed in..<br />2007 by Facebook which has built up over 600 million users since it’s launch by Harvard students in February 2004 sharing pictures, files, statuses and gossip and have over 50% actively logging in sharing of 5 billion links<br />Twitter publicly in July 2006 with it’s virgin tweet sent internally on March 21st 2006 by one of the founders Jack Dorsey with now over 200 million users<br /> Twitter: amanda_hill FB: TheSocialMediaCafe<br />

More importantly do they know yours..<br />4. Will they happily take your call…?<br />5.
