  • 1. INSIDE THE COCHLEA  Regions of the basilar membrane respond to different frequencies  High frequencies near the oval window, low frequencies at the apex
  • 2. ORGAN OF CORTI  Movement of cochlear fluid causes tectorial and basilar membranes to bend  Outer hair cells are stimulated leading to action potentials in the inner hair cells
  • 3. AUDITORY PATHWAYS  Inner hair cells synapse on bipolar cells forming the auditory nerve  Input from the left ear crosses to the right inferior colliculus Medial geniculate nucleus of the thalamus Primary auditory cortex of the temporal lobe
