  • 3. u Sir Edmund Hillary was born on July 20th 1919, in the south of Auckland. He grew up in Tuakau. He travelled to secondary school in the city which took 2 hours every morning. It was during a school trip to Mount Ruapehu that Edmund Hillary became interested in mountain climbing. Biography
  • 4. During World War 2, he worked as an air- force navigator. In 1952, Edmund Hillary joined a New Zealand climbing team that trekked the Himalayas. This was just the beginning of his exploring. As time passed, he felt climbing became more and more interesting. Biography
  • 5. In 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, a man from Nepal became the first humans to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. Hillary also climbed different peaks in the Himalayas. When he came back down to his base, his words were “ We didn’t know if it was humanly possible to reach the top of Mount Everest. And even using oxygen tanks as we were, if we did get to the top, we weren’t at all sure whether we wouldn’t drop dead or something of that nature.” Biography
  • 6. After he came back, he married an old friend Louise Rose. Louise gave birth to three children: Peter, Sarah & Belinda. Biography
  • 7. On March 31st Louise and Belinda were flying to a camp near Mt. Everest to meet Edmund Hillary but they died in a plane crash. Edmund Hillary remarried June Mulgrew in 1989. He is now 87. Biography CONTENTS
