  3. 3. The Biography of Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. His father was a wool weaver. When Columbus was 14 he went to sea and as a young man lived in Portugal. In 1480 Columbus married Filipa Perestrello and their first son, Diego, was born. Eight years later, in 1488, Christopher’s second son, Fernando, was born.
  4. 4. Columbus thought that he could find a shorter way to Asia to trade for spices. He believed that the world was round. He asked King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to rent some crew and three ships and they agreed. The three ships names were Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain, in 1492. During this expedition he went to the Caribbean islands, San Salvador (which he named), Cuba and many other islands.
  5. 5. <ul><li>On his second, larger expedition </li></ul><ul><li>(September 25,1493-June 11,1496), </li></ul><ul><li>Columbus sailed with 17 ships and between </li></ul><ul><li>1,200 and 1,500 men to find gold and </li></ul><ul><li>capture Indians as slaves in Central </li></ul><ul><li>America. </li></ul>He spotted and named the island of Dominica on November 3, 1493.
  6. 6. On the third expedition he set sail in 1498, and while three of his ships went to Hispaniola . Columbus sailed down a southern route and discovered the islands of Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada and Margarita. He thought he saw a more southern island but it was actually the mainland of South America. Columbus was the first European since the Vikings to set foot on mainland America.
  7. 7. Upon returning to Hispaniola, Columbus found the colonists short of food and not happy. The king sent a representative to check on things and Columbus was arrested and put in chains. He was shipped back to Spain but once again the king and queen forgave him.
  8. 8. On his fourth and final expedition, Columbus sailed to Mexico, Honduras , Panama and Santiago (Jamaica). In 1506 Christopher died in peace in Vallida.

  12. 12. Christopher was a risk taker because he asked King Ferdenand for a lot of things even though King Ferdenand tried to torture him. Christopher was a thinker because he thought of sailing around the world. Christopher wasn’t balanced because he was away too much out at sea. Christopher wasn’t caring because he killed the red Indians.

Christopher introduced Europe to America and America to Europe. </li></ul><ul><li>Christopher was in search of a quicker way to Asia. Christopher was in search of spices and gold. </li></ul><ul><li>He returned with spices and slaves. </li></ul><ul><li>If Christopher didn’t discover America the western world wouldn’t have known about America </li></ul>
