After creating freelance cartoons & illustrations for many years and working as the Creative Director in an ad agency, Kaufman picked up the paintbrush to start painting. He has been painting and exhibiting his work fulltime since 1995. His original paintings and other works of art are exhibited in galleries and other venues in the United States and in Europe.
illustration - A design or picture in a book , magazine or other print or electronic medium that explains the text or shows what happens in a story.
cartoon - A kind of drawing done to get people thinking, angry, laughing, or otherwise amused, often accompanied by a caption . A cartoon usually has simple lines , uses basic colors , and tells a story in one or a series of pictures called frames or panels.
How do I start?
you need paper and pencil
begin by ‘Loosening Up’
try to imitate these shapes (oval, circles, and scratches) with your pencil and feel the pencil freedom
begin by sketching shapes you know

Lets cartoon a cat
begin with the basic shape
notice the artist has added a red line for the halfway point in the face. This is where the eyes are placed (above the line)
In the style of Charles Kauffman, we will be designing a cartoon animal and painting it on a crushed soda can.
