What is the Nuyorican movement? •Cultural and intellectual movement•Originated in the late 1960’s and 1970’s •Formed as a means to validate the Puerto Rican experience in the United States •Started in Neighborhoods such as Loisiada, East Harlem and the South Bronx •Gave Birth to cultural organizations such as, Nuyorican Poets Café, Puerto Rican traveling theatre, and El Museo del Barrio

What is a Nuyorican?• “New York” and “Puerto Rican” clash based on origins and culture dealing with people who are Puerto Rican or of Puerto Rican Decent• First started out as an INSULT until Miguel Algarin reclaimed it and transformed it.• Largely located in or around New York State• Differentiates those of Puerto Rican descent from the Puerto Rico-born (Boricuas)
