    • Battle of the Atlantic:
      • German Wolf Pack Raids
      • Allies respond by sending convoys
      • Battle turns in favor of allies (1943)
  • 4. D-DAY
  • 5. D-Day - June 6, 1944
    • Allied forces storm the beaches of France
    • German troops try to attack allies
    • By September 1944:
      • Allies had freed France, Belgium, Luxembourg
  • 6. Battle of the Bulge
    • Hitler sent troops after the British and U.S. because he was mad they had captured a German city in 1944.
      • Wanted to surprise attack to divide allied forces
    • Germans lost many troops, weapons, & tanks.
    • Germans had no other option but to begin retreating.
  • 7. Liberation & V-E Day
    • 1944: Concentration camps start being liberated by Soviets & Americans.
    • April 1945: Hitler commits suicide
    • May 8 th , 1945: V-E Day
      • Germany’s Third Reich surrenders
  • 8. War in the Pacific
  • 9. The Battle of Midway
    • Japanese planned on attacking the island of Midway
    • BUT, the U.S. Navy defeated the Imperial Japanese Navy & caused immense damage
    • The Americans had “avenged Pearl Harbor.”
  • 10. “ Island Hopping”
    • Battle of Midway = Turning Point of Pacific War
    • American troops start “island hopping.”
      • Going from island to island to win back territory that the Japanese had taken
  • 11. Iwo Jima
    • First attack on the Japanese home islands, and despite heavy defending by the Japanese, the U.S. was able to capture Iwo Jima.
    • Only one more island would have to be taken over until the U.S. could really attack Japan.

  • 13. The Battle of Okinawa
    • Battle on the ocean and Japanese soil
    • U.S. occupied Okinawa and used it for a close place for U.S. troops to access Japan.
    • Churchill predicted that
    • millions of lives would be
    • lost if the Allies invaded Japan
      • Would lead scientists to
      • work on an atomic bomb
  • 14. U.S. Heroes
    • African-Americans
      • The Tuskegee Airmen fought in Italy and won two Distinguished Unit Citations
    • Mexican-Americans
      • 17 soldiers won the Congressional model of Honor
    • Japanese-Americans
      • 100 th Battalion merged with all-Nisei 442 nd Regimental Combat League & became most decorated unit in U.S. history
