  • The Hmong Hill Tribe of northern Thailand Meo

    • This tribe, also known as the Meo, are nomads who have communities present across South East Asia as well as China.
    • There are believed to be a total of 65,000 Hmong living in Thailand, Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai and Phetchaban.
    • There are about four million Hmong living in southern China and this tribe has strong cultural similarities with Chinese people.

    • Apart from the cultivation of opium, the Hmong hill tribe are renowned animal breeders who produce good quality ponies.
    • In Laos, a significant number of Hmong / Mong people fought against the communist - nationalist Pathet Lao during the Secret War .
    • When the Pathet Lao took over the government in 1975, Hmong / Mong people were singled out for retribution, resulting in many fleeing to Thailand .
