2. 2. Intro: Peter and Europe

When Peter visited Europe’s great cultures, specifically England, France and Germany, he felt that Russia could also be great. Peter was very fond of the cultures that Europe had and wanted to bring the best of them to Russia. A major task for Peter was eliminating Russia’s old ways and replacing them with the new modern European ways. With change on Peter’s mind this meant that Russia would have to take many chances. The most drastic change that Peter made was establishing a new capital city, St. Petersburg. This was intended to bring Russia closer to Europe and its culture.

The Task of Westernization

Architecture

Even though Peter felt that Russian Culture was out of date, he tried very hard to fix this problem whether Russia liked it or not. More importantly, Russia became one of the few nations along with England, France and Germany to have an established Academy of Science and Arts institutions. Peter’s influences were very crucial to Russia and for its future. Peter influences have made the ground work for what Russia could be, only the future leaders of Russia can continue Peter’s dream. Peter’s revolutionary reforms give Russia a chance to something great.
