The Grand National is an equestrian competition in England. It is themost valuable jump race in Europe.
This competition came from thetradition of hunting. Officiallythe first time was held at Aintree,near Liverpool, in 1839. It wasattended by 17 competitors, whogalloped over 6 kilometres offields, fencing pens a few sheepand three major obstacles: a walland two streams.
The race is held annually on a Saturday afternoon in early April.The horses have to be strong, disciplined and intelligent because theyhave to jump and gallop 30 obstacles along a rough trail of 7 kilometres.The race consists of two laps to Aintree circuit, with 16 obstacles in thefirst and 14 in the second.You can have up to 40 horses in competition. The greatest legend of GrandNational is the horse Red Rum,winner in three editions.The race was not held between1916 and 1918 or between 1941 and1945, during the World Wars.
