They have a much smaller Operating System kernelTerminals that are designed to insulate the userfrom the O/S often use Linux. The smaller kerneltakes up much less space on the disk, a small CFcard can be used instead of a hard drive. Evenwith the small size, the operating system is stillfully capable and functions like you have cometo expect.
They power down and start up quickerAs Windows is closing and opening applicationsduring a typical shutdown or startup a lot oftime is wasted. In an instrument with a smallerkernel the shutdown and startup is much faster.
Stable hardware platformTypically they do not go obsolete as quickly as adesktop PC because they are installed inproducts that need to be around for a long time.Since they are small and completely self-contained (sound card, I/O ports and everythingon one little card), they are easy to upgrade too.
