RFID Implementation at Huddersfield

Background <ul><li>library at Huddersfield (335K items) and LRC at Barnsley (8K items) </li></ul><ul><li>3M self service units since 1998 </li></ul><ul><li>regularly got >80% of all circ transactions via self issue </li></ul><ul><li>speed of transaction was an big issue </li></ul><ul><li>often had long queues waiting to issue or return items </li></ul>

RFID <ul><li>went out to tender Q1 2006 </li></ul><ul><li>shortlisted 5 suppliers </li></ul><ul><li>contract awarded to Intellident in May 2006 </li></ul><ul><li>stock conversion completed in under 11 weeks (approx 5,500 items per day) </li></ul><ul><li>32 students assisted with the conversion using 4 workstations </li></ul><ul><li>one group managed to convert 2,200 items in a single day (6 items per minute?) </li></ul>

RFID <ul><li>several thousand “Checkpoint” metal plates were removed from stock </li></ul><ul><li>80 “check” pens were used to mark the converted stock </li></ul><ul><li>service launched on 14/Sep/2006 </li></ul><ul><li>£60 of fines collected via self service in the first 24 hours </li></ul><ul><li>conversion identified 18,000 missing items </li></ul><ul><li>moved to using lockable CD / DVD cases </li></ul>

Problems <ul><li>Art books with metallic covers </li></ul><ul><li>removal of “Checkpoint” plates sometimes damaged the book </li></ul><ul><li>small number of conversion “miss-scans” </li></ul><ul><li>although we already had SIP2 for the 3M units, we had to purchase new SIP2 software from SirsiDynix </li></ul>
