In 2008, the population engaged in social networking increased by 30%
After a flat first half, growth accelerated
However, average time spent actually declined by 33%
mySpace became passé
Social networking market fragmented as core functions became table stakes for many sites

Time spent on mySpace declined by 70%
Time spent on Facebook more than doubled but couldn’t take up slack of its formerly larger rival
Ning, Twitter, and others grew explosively but are still much smaller – just starting to move the needle
Other social networking services like TalkShoe are currently below the radar
