*Sample Story: AN UNFORGETTABLE SUMMER ESCAPADE
A fourth year student nurse is enrolled in an exclusive school and is not diligent in his studies. Though he is intelligent, he often take some things
for granted. During the second semester of the school year they had a lesson on Emergency Nursing and he is very reluctant to listen on the discussion of
their clinical instructor. The school invited a guest speaker who is highly skilled in giving basic life support to further encourage, inspire and facilitate
student’s learning. During the discussion, he is very indolent in making some initiatives to learn. He preferred watching videos in the Internet than doing
the actual demonstration in performing BLS. He ignored the procedures and even the safety precautions in doing emergency nursing care. When the
clinical instructor asked him to do a return demonstration on CPR in front of the class, he decided not to perform, instead he let his classmate do it for
him. He just watched at the back. At the end of the semester he passed the subject with an average grade. He was just contented on learning what is BLS,
even without the its first hand experience.
Then last summer his family went to a beach resort in an island nearby for a certain celebration. They were enjoying the beautiful sceneries and
the amenities of the said resort. His brother was on a floating raft along with his nanny. Suddenly, a strong wave hit the raft and overthrew them to the
seawater. His brother do not know how to swim and therefore drowned helplessly for his life jacket was loosened and adrift elsewhere. The brother was
not saved by the nanny, although being tried to, because of the strong sea waves. The nanny was able to grab the arm of the young child and was able to
swim to shore. She cried desperately for help and there were no lifeguards patrolling that time. The student nurse saw his younger brother and their nanny
on the shore. He rushed to the area and he tried to assess the vital signs of his brother. The nanny sobbed heavily. The child was not breathing and does not
have a pulse. He knew he have to perform emergency care but he hesitated since he knew he might lack the competence in doing such. He is in dilemma.
But he doesn't want his younger brother to die. Therefore, he instructed their nanny to find the nearest lifeguard and he starts to perform CPR.
Deep inside he knows, he is not prepared, and he fears that he might do it wrongly. But he also knows that he is the only person who can help his
brother at that time. Then he started doing airway, then compressions, then breathing. In minutes his brother responded to the CPR he made and coughed
the water he ingested. He hugged his brother and cried. The lifeguard and the nanny arrived together with their family at the shore. He cannot forget what
happened. He cannot forget what he did. He will never forget that summer. He was by far a future nurse, and he knew inside that he must not take his
studies lightly. He was afraid, but he tried, and he saved a life!
