Now I’ll take you on a visual tour of the room. Let’s start at the front, and focus first on how we are delivering fully immersive experiences. When we say “fully immersive”, we are referring to experiences that go far beyond what you can get in a traditional telepresence room – for example, the ability to stand up and walk and still be seen, and delivering the best eye contact. Let’s discuss some of the innovations that enable us to deliver these fully immersive experiences.We are using three large 84” backlit-LED displays to show full-size participants from the far end. These displays are next-generation 4k resolution, also known as Ultra HD displays. This is the next big leap beyond 1080p - each display is 4 times the resolution of a 1080p display. It is an industry standard for super-high resolution you will hear a lot about in the coming years. Now please keep in mind, we are still delivering video at 1080p resolution today. However, the 1080p images are being upscaled to 4k resolution, so the image quality is much better than native 1080p displays of this size. Plus, using 4k displays results in investment protection for the customer – as new technologies are developed which take advantage of the full 4k resolution, customers will not have to upgrade the displays to benefit from these future advancements. The displays are extremely thin-bezel for displays of this size, so the three displays put together delivers a continuous video wall experience that is very close to the seamless video wall of an RPX. When delivering fully immersive experiences, the size of the displays is very important. But so is the placement of the cameras – if the cameras are above the displays, you can’t capture participates at full height because of the angle at which they must be pointed. It’s simple geometry. That’s why center-mounted cameras are so important.
In RealPresence Immersive Studio, we deliver center-mounted cameras through an innovative design which places them just in front of the displays, but in a way that is very unobtrusive and just blends right in when you are in a call. In addition to capturing participants in full height, this innovative design delivers the industry’s best eye contact since it is placed much closer to where we are actually looking than cameras above or below the displays. This all combines together to deliver a quality of experience that no one else can match.
There are two versions available – one with 9 seats, and one which adds a second row for a total of 21 seats. In higher-capacity rooms which seat this many people, in order to deliver a great experience for everyone, it’s important that the second row is higher than the first to ensure that everyone can see and be seen clearly. With RealPresence Immersive Studio we achieve this by using stool-height tables and chairs. Compared to RPX, which adds additional rows using risers, this approach is lower cost for the customer, and results in quicker installation. But in addition, it creates a more collaborative environment for the room, where participants can easily stand and walk around and still be seen.
As we move to the back of the room, you can see the acoustically-treated rear wall, which not only helps with the audio, but also gives a consistent look to every room. On the ceiling you can see acoustically-treated panels, known as the “cloud”, as well as lighting which is optimized to deliver the best possible visual experience for all participants. The lighting, could and rear wall are optional components, but we highly recommend them in order to deliver the best possible video and audio experience, as well as consistent experience which requires less room modification.
Audio quality is at least as important as video quality in delivering a fully-immersive experience that allows users to forget they are on a video call. Earlier I mentioned the optimized environment with acoustically-treated materials, and that is a huge part of how RealPresence Immersive Studio delivers such a fantastic audio experience. But we also have some unique technology advancements that take spatial audio to a whole new level. We developed an innovative new approach to immersive audio, utilizing unique speaker placement and SoundStructure as the audio engine to deliver sounds that actually appear to be coming from the displays – not above or below them. The result is voices that sound as if they are coming right out of the mouths of the people speaking. Known as Polycom 3D Voice, it is truly remarkable – if you close your eyes, you can pinpoint exactly where the person speaking is located just by hearing their voice. It is breakthrough technology that will wow your customers, and deliver a new aspect of realism to their video collaboration.
… move the content to one of the large 84” people displays. Users can select which display to show the content on, or they can show it on all three. Showing content on the 84” displays is a very impressive experience, and even detailed spreadsheets and diagrams are clearly visible to all participants.For content interaction, and optional 70” touch display supporting our VisualBoard technology is also available. It is mounted to the side wall, and allows participants to create, share and annotate content in real-time. Another option for sending content is using your own device you bring into the meeting room, which can easily connect to the RealPresence Immersive Studio using our SmartPairing technology. Once paired, you can use your iPad with free RealPresence Mobile software to share and annotate content right from your tablet. Or you could pair your laptop to share any application from your PC, or receive content from a standard laptop using our RealPresence Content Sharing Suite. In summary, there are many ways to collaborate using RealPresence Immersive Studio, which is important as different meetings have different types of collaboration requirements. Plus, it is designed for even more in the future – the architecture of the solution allows for even more content flexibility in future software enhancements, and the delivery of 4k Ultra HD displays today makes the system ready for super hi-res content and dividing the displays into multiple 1080p segments in the future.
Users can easily move the content, dial calls, and access other features through a dedicated 10” touch panel. This is not the Polycom Touch Control – it is an entirely new experience on new hardware, with seamless multi-touch gestures just like you are already familiar with on tablet devices.The 10” touch panel features the Polycom UX, the new user interface first launched late last year. Users familiar with RealPresence Group Series will immediately be familiar with the interface. In addition, we have added in a number of elements that are unique to immersive rooms. Many of these were innovations from the Halo user interface. Halo was very well-regarded in the industry as having an extremely intuitive interface that inspired confidence in users to be able to control and manage their own calls. By combining the best of the Polycom UX and Halo interfaces, we have developed a breakthrough UI that we are confident will be regarded as the best in the industry.
